Hi, I am about to finish uni and have got a job offer which i am happy about will be starting end of august so have the summer to get up some cash.

I want to buy myself a car for commuting to work although a fair bit of the time I will cycle as it is only about 10 miles each way. However as i live in Newcastle can be cold and wet so want the car as a back up. Also will be doing a bit of travelling as working as a consultant engineer.

I am 20 at the moment 21 when i get the car so cheap insurance will make a difference. I was looking at the following:

mini, Golf, Audi A3, and MAZDA 3. At the moment I like the mazda because cheap insurance the diesel dose upwards of 70 miles per gallon.

Any opinions will have between 4-6 grand when I buy.

Firstly, 10 miles each way when means a diesel goes out the window. Add to it that you won't be using it most days and it makes fuel consumption very unimportant. Even if you drive every single day to work you won't be doing 5000 miles per year. Unless you are slapping 12,000 miles per year on in extra travelling I would go for a petrol.

Are you an experienced driver? If not then I would buy a 2003-2004 MK1.5 Focus petrol and gain some experience/competence.

I'd be looking more along these lines:

The wheels are nice enough and it is a 3 door. A Golf of the same price would be older. Same goes for an A3. Mazda 3 - I don't know much about those. A Mini is a class smaller than the others so doesn't make sense if all the other choices are small family cars.

Hi the fuel would not be important for the commute but most of the miles i will do will be longer trips. My family and a lot of friends live on the south coast so will drive there 6-8 times a year. an dhave to go to outside London aswell a few times.

I like the mazda because of the size could get a few friends and snowboard in it and go to alps or scotland for a trip no problem thats why i was looking at the diesel mazda and it is fairly quick

You need to be more specific :).

How many miles will you do per year?
How big do you want the car to be? A Mazda 3 is in the same category as a Focus/Astra/Golf. The Mini is very small - Why is that on the list?

I am open to suggestion i have no idea how many miles it will work out being maybe 12000 region not overly sure though.
Size of the car dose not matter overly as big cars have benefits and so do small ones.

My previous car was a Ford Ka so anything is better. was just trying to see if anyone owned any of these or had compared these at all.

Personally I would go for the focus, they seem to be the most sensible cars for the money (spec wise etc). Go for a 1.8 and you wouldn't have a problem doing 12000 miles a year in it.

Also can you please swap and S and E around when you spell does please.
