as above really?

the long story is a friend and her mum (nudge nudge etc) want to get me involved with 'their' business and to me it just looks like pyramid selling/multilevel marketing at worst and bog standard commission selling at best, they're adamant they're making money from it and they know someone who makes a whole lot from it (ie enough to live on without a second job) but it just looks suspect to me.
They've invited me to come see their part of it in action but if they simply show me a whiteboard and discuss how by selling the plan to my friends I'll benefit then I'll know to do a runner out the nearest window but in the mean time i wondered if anyone else had had any experience of this multi-billion dollar corporation?

I've got nothing left to add then. If you can see what Wikipedia says and you're still interested, then perhaps you're trying not to see the obvious.

I once went to one of these type things when I was a student looking for more money. It was so obviously pyramid selling that I backed away. I think they must rely on people who wilfully suspend their disbelief - ask yourself if you're doing that.

that's more like it, read my post though, I've not, nor do I intend to be suckered in but I wont deny I'm a little interested to see it supposedly 'working'.

It's just another kleeneze catalogue semi-scam.

People make money at it, I suppose, but they're far from the majority.

yeah, I've been trying to tell this to said friend but she just isn't getting it (whilst being adamant that I 'just don't get it') lol

Let her get on with it if she doesn't want to listen.

It relies on the people 'selling' the organisation to their recruits being good speakers and convincing them they're onto a great thing, that's how the person who recruits you gets their money.

Walking about sticking catalogues through people's doors isn't going to make you any money.

the irony of it all is that on paper she's far and away more intelligent than me and she's my friend, I don't want her to waste money chasing dragons.

They are absolutely going to try to get you involved in it. These schemes rely on people leaning on friendships and family to get people suckered into it. It's an abuse of your friendship if she does...

That's the thing, if you are a decent salesperson and don't mind...misrepresenting the situation to as many people as possible, you certainly could earn quite a good living from it. The problem is that most people you know who had common sense would hate you.

Recently met a girl doing this with a group called arbonne. She described herself as an entrepreneur, a businesswoman who is interested in creating opportunities etc etc. Turns out she's tried to convert most of my friends!

She's abusing societal norms, just like my pet hates charity muggers. She'll be all nice about it but really she's only talking to you cynically to rip you off. For some reason societal norms mean you don't refuse in any way but politely. You have to find an excuse - what she's doing isn't seen as being rude, but if you were to tell her to go take a **** to herself then you'd be the one in the wrong.

It's how a lot of conmen operate as well - they play you against the rules of politeness and before you know it you've lost out.

Give it a few minutes and I'm pretty sure I'd manage :p

It is a horrible cynical business though. Distasteful.

I get on my high horse about things like this... I absolutely detest the vulnerable being taken for a ride, regardless if it's this type of thing, or payday loans or charity muggers or mobile phone charges... Consumer law in the UK means that anyone with enough smarts gets things sorted, but the less than average people get shafted.

Castiel if you read this thread, perhaps it'll put some light on why I'm so nasty to charity muggers.

this tbh...

what further insight do you need OP other than the blatantly obvious point that it is a pyramid scheme and you'd be best off staying well away

this sort of marketing scheme relies on people taking advantage of friends - the only redeeming feature of this one seems to be that at least they have to sell products to make money - with some other schemes there are financial incentives to simply get others signed up as sellers to the point where you can make more money from simply recruiting friends into the business than from actually selling any of the merchandise.

Are those cowboys still going? As everyone has said, it's a simple pyramid scheme, meaning that you, as a late starter, will never make money. All you'll do is drive away all your friends from constantly trying to sell them Amway's second-rate cleaning stuff.

An ex-girlfriend used to be involved in this, though it's something I haven't yet dabbled in. I think she did ok out of it. The closest I got was by going to a seminar which was essentially the same thing, just under a different name, 'SAVECO' iirc.
