Power supplied has died so I'm thinking about upgrading when the pc is apart.

The current spec of my PC is;

Power Supply - Active Power M668 ( fan has stopped working )
Motherboard – Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe WiFi
CPU - AMD Phenom ii 1100t
Cooler – Stock AMD item
RAM - 2 x 2Gb DDR2 800 OCZ2P4GK
Graphics – Two Powercolor ATI HD4870 512mb
HDD – Matrox 500Gb

So for my many questions.

Power Supply – What would be the best one for me to replace it with? I would like a relatively quite one if at all possible.

CPU Cooler – Im happy enough with the CPU but is the a nice quiet option for cooling it? If so what would you recommend? Are the cheap water coolers any good?

RAM/MB – I would like to do something with this but dont know what. I was thinking I could just get two more sticks of DDR2 800 and bring it up to 8gb. Though I am told the CPU works better with 1066 RAM. So would I be better just getting 8GB of 1066 DDR2? Or would I be better off getting a AM3 mother board and getting DDR3? That last one is much more expensive and from what I understand AM3 is a end of line product so a lot of money with no future upgrade perhaps?

Graphics – Well its years since I last got in to gaming but im really getting in to the battlefield series. I don't have any problem with my two HD4870 cards but I have never used anything better so don't really know if its worth upgrading them or not. I know I can pick up used 512mb HD4870 cards for next to nothing would that be worth it? Would it be worth getting another more modern card? Also is there any way to quieten down my HD4870 cards at all? The stock fans sound like a whirlwind.

HDD – Now I am fine for space on my HDD but it is rather slow. My mother board has built in RAID so I guess I could just get some quicker drives set them up like this. I have also seen Hybrid drives and SSD drives that look like they may work well. My mother board has quite old and slow SATA interface so I was also looking at PCI-e cards as it looks the best option apart from I loose my option of fitting a 3rd graphics card. Unless I can find a single slot card that is.

I am looking to pay around £500 all in for the new psu and any upgrades.

Sorry for the long post but thanks in advance for any help.

PSU is dead or has the fan stopped? cos for a couple of quid you could replace the PSU fan with very little technical ability... and keep on playing your fav game.

Its just the fan has stopped. I have zip tied a case fan on to the vent for now and it work for now. So you think i should just crack it open?

Sure go for it.

Just be careful of touching the big capacitors or any heatsinks as you might get a shock/tickle.

It's safe enough as long as you are careful.

However that PSU is a cheapo unit so probably not worth the bother.

I'd just whizz the cover off the PSU and change the fan... But I suppose I am cutting 20+ years electronic's repair experience out of the explanation :D ...TBH if the psu fan has died and your not technically qualified to maintain the PSU - replace it! The cables are pretty easy to disconnect and replace...

For another £100-odd, you could put together an almost complete new system that would perform better than what you have at the moment :)
