how does the 670 beat the 680

I don't know what passmark is suppose to be measuring, but if you look at all the scores they are all over the show and have no comparison to gaming or gaming type benchmarks

that also says the 580 > 7970 which is clearly not true either

they also don't say where they get their data from - if it's an average of all data submitted to them then it could just be that most 680 buyers are not overclocking but nearly all 670 owners are, therefore it's not an apples for apples test

edit; if you click on 680 it says samples 239, but for 670 it says samples 17...

also reading up on their d3d test, it's a very simple rendering test so again with the way boost clock works it could just be that the 680's are detecting that it's quite low load and not ramping up at all

whichever way you look at it, that passmark test is deeply flawed, so I would tend to go off reviews/benchmarks instead of that one

The 670 can beat the 680, all at stock in some scenarios:

If the game isn't shader limited then the lack of the 8th shader unit can actually allow the 670 to dynamically clock higher.
