Hi guys, I'm considering upgrading my graphics and wondering which card to go for, given that performance wise these are pretty comparable (?)

My requirements are for gaming at 1900x1200, silence under load is a big plus (which the AMD cards seem to cover).

Between the GTX 670 and HD 7950, what woudl you go for and why?

Yes, a lot of people have complained about the noise of the reference 670 coolers, so if you are like me and can't stand too much noise, its definately worth getting a non reference one with a decent cooler. Silence is golden :)

forgive my ignorance on this, but by reference cards I assume the ones with a single fan in the back are the ones to avoid?

Probably a GX 670. The KFA2 has dual cooling, probably better to get than a single fan card. Also the core clock is superior to the rest. However, I'm not too familiar with the quality of KFA2.

Or the Gigabyte Windforce has tri cooling so I imagine it's a super cool card.

The Sapphire HD 7950 OC edition is a great card, though. Firstly, it is super cool and I've had idle temperatures of 29 degrees which is ridiculous. When playing games I don't think I've exceeded 55 degrees even with extra OCing. The core clock is around the same as most of the 670s and has a GB more memory. Just the memory clock is 5000MHz (670 has 6008MHz) but I would think there's not much performance difference between both overall.

EDIT: For the 7950 I was meant to say super cool and quiet as I'm talking from first hand experience. You cannot hear any difference between 30% and 65% fan speed.

At stock the dynamically clocked 670 is upto 7% faster than a stock 7950

When you overclock the 670 and 7950 to comparable amounts they're the same performance.

670 its cheaper to run , think it just edges FPS in most games , though could argue its neck and neck , its nvidia , and supposed to be better driver support , plus the phsx , in my opinion i would put these cards in this order 7950-670-7970-680-690 and i would go windforce or twin fozr .

Agree. Not sure if I would put 7950 or 670 first, though.

this is the only review site i have seen where the HD7970 beats the GTX670 in BF3 - seems fishy to me

Ok, try this on for size, in benchmarks and gaming benchmarks, when both overclocked the 680 and 7970 are effectively the same performance, but only a very small percentage of online reviews noted this fact.

That seems more fishy and gives a better insight into Nvidia product reviews.

Somehow my old Sapphire HD 7950 OC beats my gtx 670 windforce on heaven 3.0

Sapphire HD 7950 OC
1125mhz/1475
Tessellation off
i7 920 @ 3.5ghz 6gb ram

Sapphire HD 7950 OC
1125mhz/1475
Tessellation on
i7 920 @ 3.5ghz 6gb ram

Stock gtx 670 windforce
1189mhz boost
Tessellation off
i7 920 @ 4.0ghz 6gb ram

Stock gtx 670 windforce
1189mhz boost
Tessellation on
i7 920 @ 4.0ghz 6gb ram

Tho thats only 1 benchmark and my gtx 670 is better proformance on the games i play. Id choose a refence 670 over a 7950, But i think a card like the Asus HD 7970 DirectCU II is worth considering vs a gtx 670 windforce

the asus one is a lot more expensive though

If getting reference cards go 670. There are models on for £300 (!) at the moment.

However, the non reference 670s are all £360+, the same price as some non ref 7970s, which will beat it by a moderate margin when overclocking (overclocked GTX680 performance) . At that point I'd go 7970 instead.
