seems to connect quicker but the speed is still terrible, not even loading web pages.

I'd quickly test the connection with wireless security turned off, just to rule anything related there out.
 
I know you've said you've reinstalled the drivers but have you gone and got the latest ones from the Edimax website?
 
What protocol does your laptop use? wireless b, g or n?

My wireless (desktop with an edimax 'N' adapter) was barely functional when someone else in the house was using a laptop that had an old 'b' chip in it. Not sure why though:P thankfully they got rid of it!

Have you tried turning microwaves, dect phones & similar off in your house as part of troubleshooting it?
 
Something that strikes me as odd is that all 7 WAPs you can see are all virtually the same RSSI - especially you own WAP which should be stronger than your neighbours down the street......maybe a radio fault in the NIC?

BINGO! i turned the laptop off and it instantly hit 3.9 mbps!
