Is there any point in having a soundcard with these speakers?

Hi
I will be buying a new comp from overclockers soon. Basically I wanted to keep the speakers I have as they are not bad. Had them for a year now:

Creative Gigaworks T20 Series II 2.0 Speaker System

those are the ones, but my current comp is an old quad core zoostorm with basic crappy parts in it, probably a rubbish motherboard. I have no sound card atm. When I get new comp from OCUK will having a soundcard (cheap one like that xonar dg) make much difference with these 2.0 speakers?
Thanks

I would have thought so, but it really depends on you. It's easy for me to tell you that you will hear a difference by getting a sound card, as not everyone does hear a difference. I think the majority of people will find there is a difference. It's not quite as obvious with speakers compared to headphones though, maybe that's why some say they notice no difference.

In another thread, the OP couldn't really say a Xonar DX he recently bought was any better than the onboard audio with his Aego M 2.1 speakers. Someone else with the same card and speakers, found the difference was quite apparent.

The Xonar DG is a good budget card, and a good starter one for anyone who isn't sure if they will hear a difference.

Yes absolutely. They are pretty good speakers for the money, and a sound card will definitely take advantage of them.

The DG will still be better than onboard sound, but if you have a PCI slot, then I'd recommend trying to get a 2nd hand X-Fi Xtreme Music for about £15. (Install the latest 'PAX' drivers (Look up "PAX your sound out").

If you prefer to buy new, then the D1 is pretty good for the money (I have this card + an X-Fi Elite Pro).

Whether you consider those speakers worth about £55+ for the D1 I don't know. They are still pretty good though.

I'd also agree with Marsman... sound listening is subjective... think of it like some people have REALLY good vision, others not so good. Same with your ear's, we just don't think about it so much.

Personally, I found the difference in audio quality most apparent when I swapped back to onboard sound. It was terrible. A few weeks later I got another sound card to replace the one I sold lol.

Thanks for the replies, I could try that X-Fi one or xonar DG, probably worth it for how much it costs. Thanks.

Yes, I have the same speakers paired with a Titanium HD, had a Xonar DS before and its a step above that. And the DS was a huge leap from onboard.

It's absolutely worth getting a sound card. I have an X-Fi Xtreme Music and it sounds far better than onboard on my sub £20 Logitech X-140 speakers. I mainly use my Steelseries Siberia headphones though.
