go into your bios and check which mode sata is in
You might need a sata ahci driver for windows xp if you are lucky there will be one

generally you have to install the older OS first , are you trying to install this over your win7 install or are you installing it to another partition ?

my bios is very basic so i dont see which sata mode its in. in device manager it says ultra dma 5

im wanting win7 and xp on my laptop, dual boot, install xp on a seperate partition.

i dont get to start installing xp, is just goes thru the initial copying files at the start for a few mins then the blue screen.

ok ill have a look into xp mode, i have win 7 ultimate so it should be fine to install. I got some software called inpa for running a diagnostic cable on my bmw but im having problems, its meant to be ok on w7 but i cant get it to work properly so i want to try it under xp.

im afraid in xp mode it does not see my cable in device manager so thats no good, i think the reason i get an error with xp is my laptop has a sata drive, also i cant install drivers at startup as i dont have a floppy. oh well.

I wouldn't as installing XP will erase the windows 7 boot manager (or whatever it's called) and replace it, and you won't be able to access windows 7 again without running a repair to the W7 installation (from what I heard, you have to install XP first and W7 second).

Also I'm guessing that it's a USB cable so you could see if another virtual machine program can pick it up and emulate it in the virtual OS (I'm guessing that from what you've said, you already have a usable XP key and disc to install it).
