Hello all,

I just wanted to raise some awareness for a challenge a friend is doing.

He's a paramedic, also works on rescue 771 squadron at RNAS Culdrose. His 2 buddies - a Royal Marine and another 771 Search & Rescue officer.

Their challenge? To cycle across AMERICA. In 17 DAYS.
(Capital letters for shock and awe)

3100 miles - should be quite a trek! You can read about their challenge here http://3100miles.co.uk/

It's surely not impossible but it certainly is both physically and mentally challenging.
3100 miles, 17 days = 182 miles per day.

Assuming they cycle for around 14 hours a day, they'd have to be doing around 13mph average in order to achieve this. Remembering that you have to eat, and have a good nights sleep.

It's like RAAM but they have support and all that.

They're going to have real trouble completing it unless they have support.

Whilst 182 miles in a day is easily possible (some people have done 500+ in a day)

But day after day, 100 is easilly doable day after day but that extra 82 will take it out of you!

182 miles in a day is too much, especially when you also need to navigate.

Although, a lot easier if you have support and not dragging 20kg of gear.

To propose to do this I think you'd need to be smart enough to realise how tough it is and plan it out in advance and train properly, or you'd need to be a blustering moron. Their website seems to give the impression that they know what they're doing.

This doesn't appear to be the usual "I'm going to do something anyway, it's not difficult, but I'm going to force everybody I know to give me a fiver" type thing. It appears to be a full on hardcore challenge.

Good luck to them!

I read that book about that chap who rode across the world on a pushbike, 182 miles is a LONG stint each day, but I think its achievable over just 17 days. Certainly not sustainable beyond that.

Good effort though, and good luck!

Accidents will always happen. And as they're marines/paramedics/search and rescue officers, I'd say they're as prepared as they can be. They've been in wars, they've rowed the Atlantic, they save lives on a daily basis.

They're safe, they're well prepared, and they're determined to raise lots of money for charity!

i hope they are running a support car behind them. It would be good insurance having a couple wifes or something rent a minivan as an escort car.

And looking at the map, bicycles aren't even allowed on most interstates, unl;ess you can get a permit?
