So.....after 6 years of not being on the ice, we're having a dads v lads ice hockey match tomorrow night at training as the season has ended now.
6 years ago my lad was 8, so even though it was 10 years prior to that when i last donned my kit and played, he was only knee high to a grasshopper.
Now he's 14, plays for England, is almost as tall as me and is almost certainly going to be gunning for me.

1. He can skate much much much better than me
2. He's bloody strong for 14
3. Has a ripping wristshot
4. Got iron shoulders
5. I'm old

My lil bro who played hockey to a pretty high standard sent me a text last night. It read "haha....your son will smash you into pieces!"
yeah...cheers bro! :(

So....if you don't hear from me for a few days, it'll be cos i'm eating through a straw, typing with a pencil between my remaining thumb and finger....whilst in a hospital bed!

Oh...i love my son and he loves me......but at 14 it's his best opportunity to 'get some' on his dad....on his own turf/ice so to speak.

I'm dead!

Farewell!

haha, sounds excellent. Make sure you have some extra padding and keep away from the walls :P

1 Find a big guy in the gym
2 Pay him to dress up in your kit + facemask
3 Laugh at your son's injuries
:D

Lol...thanks for that.
My office buddy was 50 at the weekend. He stills 'plays' cricket, but his fingers are all mangled from breaks suffered as a wicketkeeper.

Both hockey coaches are older than me (and one is canadian and an ex-NHL-er), but they have been playing for most of their lives. I only ever pratted around on the ice with a rec team.....admittedly with all the grace of a sack of carrots on a pony.

Didn't mean he was too old.

I just meant at 14 I wouldn't have a chance of bossing my Dad around even if I was a better skater.

Me and my dad both do Kyokushin karate, even at 59 he is a handful lol, I'm 26.

Spent almost 20 years practising martial arts Dkore, it means nothing when on the ice.....my lad has been playing hockey since he was 6.....i don't have a chance.
Ironically he gave up shotokan at the age of 7 when his ice hockey started to take off. He'd have been shodan by the age of 10 if he'd kept it up.
It's all in good fun, its not like he's got a serious axe to grind.
He'll just enjoy boarding me, knowing full well i can't catch him. After all it is a contact sport.

Could make the little bugger walk back to Nottingham though. :D

LMAO....nice....thanks!
I've already forewarned by office buddy that i may not make it in on time, as we don't finish till 10pm, then i have to travel 55 miles back home, so own;t be home till about 11.30pm.....that's if i don't detout to A&E.

I iz back.....and totally knacked.
He drilled me 3 times into the boards, nearly broke my arm on one check. The team goon kept circling me like a bloody vulture and its fair to say i was crappng myself. He hits like a freight train.
My lad was skating backwards as i was trying to catch him going forwards.....little bleeder.
If anyone is a fan of UK ice hockey, they'll probably know the name Ron Shudra, well he's the team coach and i was proud that i cheap-shotted him into the boards whilst the kids had distracted him. :)

Great fun for an hour and a half, however waking up this morning was no fun and my ankles, knee, elbow and back are screaming at me.

Might need to leave it a year before doing it again mind.

can just imagine that "here, do me a favour, see him over there its me dad scare the **** out of him for me.......".

glad to see you didn't take to long to mend :D
