Had an XFX XXX 850W PSU....then fan starting making an annoying ticking ( first guess is bearing?!) runs pretty quiet then for no reason makes the noise after around 1.5hrs of uptime. poke the fan to stop it temporarily....fan spins up without the noise afterwards for another 1.5hrs...so weird.

Anyway...my system is very quiet, with this psu being the loudest component now. RMA'ing it and going for somethign different.

Read the reviews of some of the PSU's on OCUK's site:

looking for an 850W really.

Ther corsair HX850: HAs a 140mm fan but someone on a review said they could hear it 4metres away from their build.

Corsair AX850: This has a 120mm fan (as opposed to 140mm) So I thought itd be louder..but apparently its very quiet.

Then theres this: What i don't understand is how it can claim to be silent when it has 2* 60mm fans....I thought smaller fans meant more noise?!

DONT UNDERSTAND!?- but I need the quietest psu as the rest of my build is practically silent.

the fans only spin up when the psu comes under heavier load and their speed is relevant to the temperature. iirc from the review i read they operate independently depending on which components are heating up. the reviewer commented that the psu was very efficient so little energy was expended as heat, which meant the fans were off most of the time and even when they were on they were very quiet.

Design looks like this one from 1986 from PC Power and Cooling (which was brought out by OCZ a couple of years ago):

Thanks, going to go for the AX850 to play it safe as corsair have good customer service etc. Xilence looks interesting though.
