Student convicted of using a webcam to secretly film his room-mate in a gay encounter imprisoned

And yet commonplace... should anyone who's ever been filmed doing something "embarassing" be able to get their filmer sent to jail?

If you're out in public then you have no right to privacy, however in your own bedroom you do have a right to privacy.

I don't think you would be happy if someone set up secret cameras in your house.

Why is it absurd? I know someone personally who lived with their girlfriend, and who filmed her cheating on him. He was not put in jail, but he was found guilty and fined. It was wrong, but I sympathise with him.

This act was entirely unjustified.

If you mean there's lots of people who have done something embarrassing and been filmed - do you mean sexual contact in a private place where it's only reasonable to assume total privacy? Or do you mean people out on the drink being stupid?

How ludicrous that he got the brunt of that... you don't see that there's nothing wrong with what the person you know did? Did he even broadcast it to the world? I doubt it...

American dorm room are NOT private places... they're shared with another person... so yes, this kind of thing should be expected.

They are private, they are not a public place.

Just like a shared house, it would be illegal for your flat mate to film you secretly and you would be charged.

If you're talking about the guy I know... he lived with his girlfriend but it was her place, not his - he still had his own too. I have a great deal of sympathy for him, but even he admits it was wrong now.

No, no it should not.

Of course I wouldn't be happy - where on earth do you interpret I even suggested that?

It wasn't his house, it wasn't even his private room...

Even then, WHILE I DON'T AGREE WITH IT, AND IN FACT HATE IT AND OTHER SIMILAR FORMS OF RECENT POP CULTURE (bold and caps to make it easier to read )... the fact of the matter is, this kind of thing is commonplace nowadays.

How is it any different if it's the media vs a private individual?

Why should someone be sent to jail for playing a silly prank on someone they weren't aware was mentally unstable?

No, no it should not.

But it wasn't wrong... why should the ***** be protected for being a dis-loyal harlet?

There's two disagreements here Crinkleshoes. First of all it's not a public area. It's private - just because it's shared doesn't make it public.

Secondly it's not common place at all. Can you provide examples to show that it is?

How is it common? When do media set up secret cameras in other peoples private residencies?

A public place is public and you are entitled to film.

because having an affair isn't illegal. making and distributing illegal pornography is .

if i set up a camera in women's toilets or changing rooms or in your gf/wife's bathroom and broadcast it to the world would you be fine?

Ahaha, don't be an arse.

Not the case... but because they shared the same room... the dude who's been put in prison could have left his web cam on by accident and caught the frikkin scene.

"room-mates" means something different in the US vs UK... it literally means "room" mates.

I'm really surprised that I'm in the minority on this one.
