*** The official Sony Xperia S thread ***

Could be, not sure. I got mine direct from Three. I normally don't do that, I normally buy from CPW where you get an unlocked phone. A moment of weakness as I rushed to get the phone, it was out of stock at a lot of places due to the demand. As it was the Three shop where I got it was down to just two left at the time

I'm sure if you hook it up to the pc, go on the Sony support site, install the 'pc companion' thing for xperia s, it should update regardless of network?

Right, i can possibly upgrade my contract early next week, Really want to stay with the xperia range, currently on my X10-Xperia S rom, is the Xperia S still a half decent phone, ive noticed the GalaxyII and GalaxyIII plus the HTC threads are bigger in comparison now to this and its making me think otherwise.

Popularity wise the Xperia S will pale in front of the OneX and SIII. Should only really bother you if your into the modding scene as the other 2 will get a lot more attention IMO.

Just look at the page count for the SG3 thread (151) and One X thread (100), even 'The Touchpad Android thread' has more pages. We need some excitement Sony!

Some much needed excitement for this thread:

Sony have pulled the 'we are releasing the (ICS) update ahead of schedule' trick again (they did a similar but highly unbelievable thing with the X10) and have now reverted back to their original schedule - late Q2. At least it isn't taking any 'longer' merely sticking to the original schedule. Also we are getting ICS 4.04 instead of 4.03 the 2011 devices have got, according to some we will also be receiving:

Looks like we're getting all the software features of the GX/SX with the update! Walkman, new Gallery, and probably notification bar toggles...

so has anyone taken the screen protector off yet? I'm tempted because I don't feel like I'm getting a smooth experience with it on.

I just don't want to take it off to find the screen is as scratch resistant as a block of butter!

Yep took mine off over a month ago now, all good - no damage and much better feel and response.

Not really seeing any reason I'd want to risk switching from 2.3.4 actually.

The gallery looks nice but other than that, it seems to be almost identical to Gingerbread

It doesn't look a massive change but there a few things:

  • Better browser
  • More access to apps
  • Improved task manager
  • New gallery and Walkman apps
  • Face unlock
  • Inbuilt data usage
  • Android beam
  • Hopefully improved performance and battery life
  • Plus more

Sony did quite a good job with Gingerbread and ported over a few things from ICS.

EDIT:

What Sony mean by Q2 is releasing it at the very last possible moment of Q2 in one region and then other regions in the following days or weeks ;)
