Why is there a difference between the SE and M sport CO2 ratings (and therefore mpg) for the same given engines across the new 5 series range. Is it tuned exhausts or something? I was never aware of this before and always assumed a 530d SE would be the same as a 530d M Sport or is it all based around ED?

Wheels. Something I'd been wondering how BMW got away with for ages, especially given Mercedes have given different CO2 figures for different wheel sizes for some time now.

The wider your tyres the more fuel (and thus CO2 emissions) you use.

No wider rears on the SE's, and smaller base alloys too.

And the difference between economy tyres and UHP.

Lower the rolling resistance, better the economy and co2.

True but only the 520d ED has eco-tyres, the tyres used on the rest of the range are the same mix of Contisports, Michelins etc.

I imagine it'll be dependent on the weight of the vehicle / options selected / tyres / wheels etc that then influence the coast down characteristics of the car, which in turn fix what the resistance will be on the rolling road that they do the drive cycle on. It's all a bit of a con and BMW are very good at it :p
