Is it prudent to ask someone how much they paid for a car?

A colleague has recently bought a new car and I was inquiring to him with regards to the specification etc but never asked about the purchase price because I felt it wasn't prudent.

What are your thoughts? This also stems to all purchases, however small or big. For example, would you ask someone how much they paid for a house? A new piece of equipment, etc? Perhaps this is more a GD thread but my question stems from a motor purchase and I am most interested in peoples thoughts on this particular purchase.

P.S Lovely weather today.

Lots of people are fussy about telling you this.

Some people don't want you to judge them for spending a huge amount on a car. Others don't want you to know the expensive looking car they bought was quite cheap. Some would rather you didn't know about the spending power they have. Some know they got ripped off and dont want others to know.

Though to be honest it's not exactly difficult to simply work it out for yourself, answering your question and sparing the owner his blushes at the same time.

Sounds good to me;

2009 (59) Vauxhall Astra
12,000 miles on the clock
1.6 Petrol
Black
3 door hatchback

Pretty much all I can remember. It did have 17" alloys and, from what I could see, a leather interior!

Okay go! Closest amount gets an internet cookie!

I'm of the opinion that if you don't know what the person's attitude to that sort of thing is, then you probably don't know them well enough to be asking that kind of question. Personally I don't mind sharing that kind of info, however.

It's not so much asking them about the price of the car but knowing how they are with discussing their money/finances in general. Everyone is different in that respect but i think if you knew this person enough you would already know what their stance on the matter is.

Do their discuss their wage/mortgage etc openly?
