7950 OC enough for 2560x1440?

I'm considering a monitor upgrade but I don't fancy buying a 27" panel if my card isn't up for the task of driving it. I play SW:TOR mainly, but also play Diablo 3, BF3 and some other games.

As with most things it depends on the setting you will play the games and the fps you are happy to accept, but with the exception of bf3 i dont think the others are an issue, bf3 would require a small sacrifice in qaulity, i.e aa to get a constant 60 fps, and even then it might dip below every now and then.

I have a 7970 and at stock every game plays perfect @ 2560x1440....There is not much between a 7950 & 7970 so imagine you will be fine..

For the games you mentioned, these are the FPS readings I get on my Sapphire HD 7950 OC Edition with 1920x1080 at stock (all max settings):

Diablo III: 120-160FPS (this may have been with a small OC but definitely over 120) would imagine you would get at least 60-80
BF3: 50-70 depending on the scenes (I would say 30-45 for you)

Not sure about SW.

Not much use as he's going 1440 not 1080 :p

Hence why I have estimates of your FPS next to my values.

Maybe you should have asked if anyone has experience with this rather than just flat out ask if it would be worth it when people who do not own this resolution are likely to reply.

BF3 is the problem, as long as you go with lower settings you will be fine. In Ultra, the minimum frame rate scaling works like this on Multi-player, knock off 10% for your card:

1 x 7970 - 23fps
2 x 7970 - 46fps
3 x 7970 - 70fps

Seems fine to me and I play quite a lot. My card is at stock which is a slight overclock. Certainly nothing that has made me want to add another couple of GPU's.

I'm not bothered abut it being a constant 60fps as long as it plays ok..

It depends on your personal preferences. A single 7970 card with an OC of 1125 will dip to 30fps, that would give me motion sickness and get me killed ;)

I've tried Sapphire 7950 @ 2560x1440 in BF3, was not good enough. Switched back to my SLI GTX 480 very fast and returned the card.

Estimates are no use to me.

I asked in my OP (thread title) if my card is enough to drive the res. One would assume that someone who has first hand experience of the combination would add to the topic, as a few people have done.

I didn't ask if it would be worth it at all.

Maybe you should read my OP and thread title before you try and flame me?

I read your OP and all it asked is if it's enough basically. I thought it would be helpful to you; you didn't clarify your resolution in the first place. A little bit of acknowledgement and/or a 'thank you anyway' and we wouldn't have this disposition which is common on these boards. Don't worry, I won't bother replying to your questions from now on, doesn't matter to me either way. :)

Obviously if you're asking if it's enough for 2560x1440 you are essentially asking if it's worth the upgrade for a single 7950, stick to your current resolution or buy another 7950 to go with 2560x1440?
