I want to buy some stuff to do basic weight training at home

It's been said before, getting set up at home so that you aren't basically wasting your time cost quite a fair bit. About £200 for 100kg.

Closer to £300 if you include some decent bars.

Im happy with my equipment so far which i use in the garage, ive got just over 100kg, 3 sets of dumbbells, a bar bell, a multigym, pull up bars and a bench. Be adding a squat rack soon as well, but so far its ok

You all say 100kg but where can i find that for a decent price?

Stuff i was looking at before was all 50kg and i was thinking that was enough, but what do i know? :)
try local classifieds or gumtree , ebay collection only sorted by nearest location etc.
theres some right bargains out there from people who just want rid.

if your desperate just get a 100kg standard set for around 150quid.

the only real difference between standard weights and olympic is the hole size in the weights and they generally look a lot better

you can get iron standard weights ;)

i wouldnt buy vinyl whatever you do

I know? I have plenty of standard and oly plates, not sure why that makes a difference though as I was talking about the size of 'plate'.
Vinyl ones are thicker compared to the thinner metal plates :p

oh thought u were carrying from me saying the difference between olympic and standard.
:P

anyway havent vinyl plates been known to split :P they contain sand right? and look gash.... cast iron all the way they will never go out of fashion or look dated XD

Don't waste your money on standard weights because you'll only regret it in 3 months. Olympic bars are far better for many reasons and will last forever. You won't outgrow an Olympic bar but a standard one is only good for about 100kg.

Plenty of rubbish oly bars out there that are easily outgrown ;)

even if you outgrow the barbell the plates are still good for any bench attachments .

aparently standard barbells go upto 150kg limits but most are 100-120kg where as olympics barbells should start around 200kg max weight

if your confident weight lifting is for you and you wont easily give up then fork out 300quid or so on an olympic set if your unsure then get a 100kg standard set for 150 or so

I wouldn't want to be limited by a bad bar with bad weights.

Most people could hit a 200kg deadlift in 1-2 years of lifting if that's what they trained for.

Well it's a lot more expensive that i thought it would be.

I just expected to be able to pick up some basic stuff for £30-50. Are vinyls really that bad? My brothers had some (which i was using for a bit until he wanted them back) for years and they are still in good condition.

I can see your reasoning of getting 100kg instead of 50kg, even for a beginner but time those prices go steep pretty quickly. Really don't fancy going to a gym. :(

Right now i'm just trying to do 80-100+ pushups a day for a bit of shape. Investing in some weights seems very expensive though.

Why don't you want to go to a gym?

I live in a small town, only one gym and there's a lot of dicks there. Kinda defeats the point in saving money if i have to travel.

Have you been to the gym before then? Put your headphones on and ignore them, get good advice and see who the idiot is in a year or twos time.

See, the thing with it being a small town is it's basically one small group of people - the rugby boys. Nobody else goes. I know it might sound strange but it's just super cliquey in there and like i said, other options are miles away.

They simply cannot be in there all the time :)
