Most trusted review site?

Christ, not Metacritic...

'Scores' need to die. I have no problem with well presented opinions of a game, highlighting the pros and cons of a game, but giving it an arbitrary number at the end is just stupid. IGN gave Modern Warfare 3 a 9.0. It's a higher score than a great many games they review, and up there with the likes of Shogun 2, The Witcher 2, and Tribes Ascend. Really?

When checking metacritic i check the user score....MW3 has a user score of 2.2. thats probably closer to the truth than the 9 which ign gave.

I used to use IGN but so far haven't this year as some of their game scores have been a bit too high for my liking. I now use Bit-Tech instead. They aren't as games focused as the rest but they are at least accurate imo.

RPS I'd say. Of course never really trust anything and draw from a load of sources, from official stuff down to forum opinions and such.

RPS here too. They definitely not in anyone's pocket, and they always do their best to highlight stuff that's a bit different.

Even on this site, you have to be careful. For example, certain people push any GFWL game as god's gift, no matter what it's like. Which no sane person would do without a huge monetary incentive :p

I always think it is important (perhaps all important) to know what the relationship is between the reviewer and the thing reviewed. Is the reviewer in any kind of dependency relation to the thing reviewed (paid, sponsored, friend, family, fan etc. etc.). If so, I tend to take it a bit more light hearted.

Have a look at these two different reviews (not gaming related).

One is about The Stone Roses' first reunion gig: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/may/24/stone-roses-review?INTCMP=SRCH

The other is about Damien Hirst's latest art exhibition: http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2012/may/22/damien-hirst-two-weeks-review

To get to terms with these reviews, you need a sense of who the reviewers are (which I will leave to you guys to do). The same goes for gaming reviews. :)

I can't believe people think ign is a good review site - they take advertising money like no tomorrow , that's always going to impact scores and even they then **** off games in podcasts etc that they scored highly - wtf!

The only people I trust are giantbomb tbh.

Eurogamer used to be good but after there mass 8 scores and mass effect 10/10 they turned into a joke...much like ign

Meta critic is ok , but there's too much flaming on their to know what is accurate or just some 10 year old having a winge bc X game is not on their console

Player reviews on here, metacritic, guru3d, steam forums. Only blind pre-order if you trust the developer/publisher & or its a must buy for you otherwise do plenty of research & avoid all the ad driven review sites they rarely give a bad review to anything & now more than ever publishers are giving out review guidelines which mean they cannot give even a bad review a lot of the time as a condition of the early review & free copy of the game.

I am surprised the mainstream game review sites continue to even function as almost every single review is pre-paid for in advertising for at least the past 3-4 years if not much longer......

I read up on forums and the like, and also watch Totalbiscuit and Yogscast videos, and make my mind up from the footage.

The only thing I look for now is video game play or footage and forum opinions, then I decide to get it or not. I cannot think of any big website that gives honest reviews

well said good sir

Use Metacritic, if according to that its an outright stinker then usually I'd avoid that game.

If it gets a average score on that, but I think the game looks like something I'd enjoy then I get it.

Ofc if metacritic says its brilliant, and it looks like my kind of game then I go straight to buy it.

Rockpapershotgun, although sometimes they get it HORRIBLY wrong, like in cases of Mafia 2 or New Vegas.

Other than that I take my impressions from ocuk and neogaf, mostly.

RPS, Giantbomb and Co-optimus are the ones i mainly use.

Although i prefere to watch totalbiscuit's wtf is series to get a nice idea on how the game actually plays, i think he does a good job with those.

I can't trust reviews after i bought far cry 2 as it got raving reviews but that was an utterly bad game!

I usually just buy games friends say are good or ive been looking forward to.
