Is it only me who wonders how the BBC can pass of one sentence as an entire paragraph on their online website? They seem to describe entire news stories in 7 or so one sentence paragraphs.

Examples:
Today's front page, Syria crisis: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-18216176

Euro crisis: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-18216538

I'm not expecting broadsheet levels of journalism, but more detail in their articles would speak volumes.

Are we expected to take the BBC seriously as a news source?

The BBC provides a useful snapshot of news, in a short concise manner but conveys enough information. The BBC isn't enough if you want well informed, rounded, news. But it's handy for a quick read throughout the day. I think there short paragraphs are handy because it's very easy to dip in and out.

There is nothing wrong with having one sentence in a paragraph. A paragraph is intended to deal with one particular idea or point.

The BBC is justifiably held in high esteem around the world. The online stories ALWAYS include links to "Related Stories".

Frankly, anyone who relies exclusively on one Internet source for stories really doesn't understand the Internet. You can always check the Grauniad site as well or even the Daily Fail if you want a bit of porn on the side ;)

Agreed.

There are also plenty of articles/commentaries that don't follow this format if they are major/complex news stories.

I can't stand it! I use the BBC's Android app to catch up on news once a day, and frankly the thing that annoys me is how often they have grammar / spelling mistakes. It's a pretty big company to be making silly mistakes!
