How important is VRAM?

What res do you play at? Also depends on the game.

SWTOR at 1200p uses less than 1GB on my 3GB card, but I've seen BF3 at around 2GB.
 
Could you tell us the cards you are looking at, we might be able to help you then. :P

Also like everyone esle has asked, what resolution do you play at?

forget about gaming, budget and everything else except vram haha, all i wanted to know was is it better to have 2GB on a worse spec card or 1GB on a slightly higher spec card?

This is impossible to answer without any context. You aren't going to get any meaningful answer.
 
it's in your interest to give more details... like what games you play, what cards you're looking at, and budget. this way people can give you a better idea of how to spend your resources.

bitching aside, your monitor will not require more than 1gb, so under current circumstances and barring any future upgrades, go for the 1gb card. but as others have said, that there'll probably come a time when you'll want a higher res monitor. come then 1gb won't cut it.
