I currently subscribe to The Spectator, however I'm considering a change.

I really enjoy the political/current affairs half and the life quarter (though I'm convinced it's satirical!). The books/art is alright, and I read it but not that fussed. I find the articles of a good length, and I average a 1:1 poo:article ratio which is great!

I've read a few other magazines on occasion: Time, New Scientist, The Economist, National Geo. And they are good, but not sure if any of them will give me the mix of current affairs and lifestyle articles that I seek (not to mention New Scientist is very expensive!).

So, what do you read and why do you enjoy it?

Good food magazine
Olive
F1 racing

Thinking of canceling all three.

Food pgawker has replaced the food magazines and so much easier to save interesting recipes and find them again. The only thing I would miss is the one double page in good food on kitchen equipment and testing same food, but different brans. Like when they did Harrissa paste.

Popular Mechanics and Popular Science. I can't find them in the UK though.
I used to subscribe to The Economist and Monocle but I became disillusioned with news media in general and Monocle became a bit samey in a pompously smug sort of way so I stopped buying that.

Why read poncy magazines these days?

For example you can probably find more insightful articles freely available daily on the Bloomberg website/iphone app than in your fortnightly copy of the economist etc...

...

Because the Internet is stupidly hard to just find a good collection of related articles and information, brilliant if you know what your looking for though.
Internet for info you know you want to find, magazines still beat it for browsing.

Only good exception IMO is perhaps private eye - they will tend to have some unique and amusing content that you're not necessarily going to get elsewhere.

You'll find that a lot of people only read certain magazines so they can tell other people they do.

I get MCN weekly on subscription and buy bike magazines if they have some content I am interested in.

And yet I pointed out such an easy to find location in the post you only partially quoted...

It's also to do with the fact that the quality of online writing, especially the more niche you get, is far below that of the print magazines.

As I alluded to in my post, I like to read magazines on the toilet and also when on the train. I can't take my PC with me on the train! Plus, I find it more enjoyable to read printed mediums rather than sitting and looking at a screen. I spend most of my day looking at a computer, so it's nice to read in a different format.

I'm not sure why a magazine would be 'poncy'...

Not really, as that doesn't fulfill every interest does it.

Magazines are still better for browsing a limited number of related articles spread over a number of related topics. Website just have to much info and over to long a timeline. They need a way to organize it better.
