Hey peeps i recieved my parts from oc today needed to upgrade board chip ram so looking over reviews etc on here and online i decided to get the following.

board= gigabyte z77x-d3h
chip= intel i5-3570k
cooler= coolermaster hyper 612s
ram= corsair vengance low profile 8gig

i was hoping to OC the chip to around 4.4. i havent done this yet so its still at stock speed. after installing everything i checked how the cooler was doing i still have the side panel off and the temps are around 35degrees c *using real temps* on desktop/web browsing which seems fine to me so i downloaded prime95 and ran a stress test temps instantly jumped to 78-80+ degrees so i stoped the test asap, surely this is bad as far as im aware 71degrees is like the max temp thats safe?

so is this possibly a me not applying the paste correctly or something else?

i have only 2 other fans inside the case in a suck/pull setup.

could anyone give me some advice please?

Thanks
Danny!

ty for reply il take a look at the thread now. i used a piece of card and put a thin layer over the chip. is it possible its the paste since i just used the cooler master one that was provided with the cooler? would i be better to get one of the better ones or isnt there much difference?

the paste should be fine, there are better ones, but it will only be around 2-5.C better imo.
you may get better results, putting a pea size amount onto the cpu and then pushing down the cpu, then bolt it down.
i personally use a grain of rice size amount, with a little dot each side so it looks like a +, push down the cooler, then give it a little twist of 45 degrees and back again.
then bolt down, (once pushed down, never relift the cooler before bolting down, as this will introduce air bubbles)
and you have fitted it properly?
here is a guide

you might need time for the paste to settle and dont forget its very hot at the moment.

my i7 at stock is idling at 50c due to this weather and normally idles a lot less.

ok thnx again iv ordered some artic silver 5 paste so if it doesnt settle il clean it with the artic solution i got aswell and re seat it and see if this solves the issue.

j.col i will try it with ur way of doing the paste as a few friends have recomended this way also :D

thnx again

looking at that istallation guide seems i missed putting on the rubber pads to the :S looks like i made a booboo!

i bet that and your application method is the cause.
try it the way i suggested, then refit with the rubber pads ;) and your temps should be lower.
if you dont have the cleaning solution now, dont worry, i normally use kitchen paper and elbow grease (obviously with the cpu removed form the mobo)

i took off the cooler today to reseat it and to my amazment realised im a total noob i had not taken the protective label off the cooler......:( i know what a tool rite so now iv ran prime 95 and temps are around 60-70 after about 20mins.

u can not believe how annoyed at myself i am ha

hehe it sucks doesnt it :D glad its sorted now i can do some research and try overclocking for the first time :O prehaps this isnt a good idea i forgot something so simple :P
