Dara O Briain

I keep pronouncing it in my head as dara o brian, I even think it sounds better that way.

Anyone else have this issue? I can't get it through to my brain that you say BREEN, it just doesn't solidify itself in my brain at all.

Yeah I know its Irish name but meh brian sounds like how it SHOULD be pronounced to me.

You know it's not spelt O'Brian right?

You can pronounce it as Dave O'Brian if you like, but you'll be wrong as it's spelt Dara O'Briain.

I would agree with you when people pronounce their name in a different way than the normal pronunciation. Outside of work I won't stick to their pronunciation.

Yeah sorry, the title is how I know its spelt.

I wrote o brian as thats how I (try not to) say it.

And I don't know how Briain is meant to be pronounced, but I guess you're meant to say it as Breen. Unless the dude thinks Brian sounds horrid or something and didn't want people to say it that way.

My fav comedian is Russell Brand. His ponder land series was quality. Weird thing is most of the English hate him

He struck me as a ponce, until I saw him on panel shows, I've since seen his film appearances and his DVDs. He's excellent. He just doesn't care for the heterosexual posturing that so many people think is a requirement.

AFAIK it's supposed to be pronounced 'oh bree an' though I can see how you'd more easily hear just 'oh breen', as it's a very subtle inflection to get the 'an' at the end.

I think it could be more a case of everyone being very sure on how things are meant to be said, it's just that they all have their own way of doing so.

There are three major dialects of Irish (Ulster, Connacht and Munster I think) which is a pain in the rear end when studying it, especially when you end up with teachers from the various parts.

How could such an unused language have so many different variations :confused:

It probably changes depending on how quickly and sloppily he's saying it, i've definitely heard him say it as bree-an, it's a very soft change mind, it's a similar sound to the end of idea. Should be 'eye-dee-err' but many will just say 'eye-deer' when speaking quickly.
