Obese women in Bikinis - should we be advocating this as normal?

Really? So a woman with child-bearing hips, a large bosom and proportionally narrow waistline must be shopped. Thought I'd never seen such a thing in real life...oh hang on. :)

why are her curves wierd and sort of blurry? its almost as if someone has been playing with the thing in photoshop that lets you push parts of a picture around

I will have to go against the grain and say yes she is too fat and i would say no thanks. If she lost about 10kg or so she would be stunning. She's size 16/18 in that picture and that's unhealthy. I prefer size 12 MAX

Does height come in to it for you at all? As 12 at 5' is a completely different look to 12 at 6' for example....

Never understood why people say things like "12 max" as there is more to it than just a measurement.

Does not matter...

She is (imo based on the picture) clinically overweight, and as such has a higher risk of various cardio vascular diseases. People should not aspire to be overweight or obese as it is bad for health. Why these people can't see that I have no idea.

That being said... People should aspire to be at the other end of the spectrum.

Even if you are a doctor you cannot emphatically say she is clinically overweight based on that picture.

So you say that being obese is bad for your health (correct) and that people should not aspire to be so yet then say people should aspire to be at the other end of the spectrum. So aspiring to be dangerously underweight is good for you? I think not.

Exactly. Dress size without other details such as height and build is a meaningless number.

What gets me is when women who are carrying a bit of timber come with the attitude that they are the norm or a 'real woman' and you are a chauvinist pig unless you collude with this ruse.

Because we live in a feminised society where criticising women's looks openly is more likely to attract screams of SEXISM than with men, it's easier just to go along with them and allow them to continue this self delusion.

I would say most of my female friends are slim, the 'norm' to me is not being a bit chubby (or 'curvy' as women who are a bit chubby prefer to call themselves). Now obviously I can't extrapolate my collection of female friends across the nation but it is weird for me when I hear the 'real women' line when from my point of view these 'real women' are the minority.

I was walking down Brick Lane over the weekend, and I thought about this, while enjoying the views.

I realised I could barely see any fat people - 'what obesity crisis?'.

Then I realised it is because Shoreditch is mostly full of non-English people ;)

While I agree, it does distort your vision.

but have you never seen a shadow before?
That isn't just a shadow, it has been Photoshopped and/or she is in a very carefully selected pose with very strange lighting and focus. She is fat and hiding it well, and will most probably be classed as slightly obese if not touching on obese.

While it may be undesirable it is "normal" to be a bit fat now in the UK.

"In the UK an estimated 60.8 per cent of adults and 31.1 per cent of children are overweight.

According to figures from 2009, almost a quarter of adults (22 per cent of men and 24 per cent of women) in England were classified as obese (BMI 30kg/m² or over)." - BBC news

Healthy & toned should be promoted (not skinny or over-weight) - but if we are going to have women well under the correct BMI I see no reason to not have women well over the correct BMI also being promoted.

The associated self esteem issues caused by society's judgements of peoples weight (male & female) is likely to be one of the causes of the depression which exasperates the problem further (comfort eating etc).

Parenting classes, enforcement to ensure food companies reduce the sugar/salt/fat content of popular foods & tax breaks for UK based real healthy food producers would go a long way.

14 is too large no matter how tall you are, and seeing a vast majority of women are shorter then men then i still think it holds true.

Inversely size 12 doesn't look too bad even if she is 5 feet tall

It shouldn't be advertised anywhere because being fat and obese is NOT normal or NOT a good thing at all. If your obese your going to die early so should we really be advertising that? I don't think so

Love the 'Real Women' thing. So women who work their asses off in the gym and eat a decent diet are fake.

You think so? You've got it the wrong way round. Women are heaviliy critised for the slightest of blemish or imperfection whilst men seemingly are immune to such criticism.

Seeing as on average people eigh more now than they did in the past it is actually normal. You are confusing social norms with actual norms like a few others have done so. However to address your point: Being painfully thin is bad for you. Are you suggesting that most women's and men's magazines should stop advertising this look...it is, after all, equally as dmaging. Well?

You don't need to work your ass off in the gym to have a healthy or natural body-fat percentage/weight ratio. Just control it with diet and a bit of activity which is within everyone's means.
