Sapphire HD 7970 OC bought a month ago, roughly...

Constant irregular black screen crashing

goes to black screen only during games and then no screen or controlls (no alt+f4, no ctrl alt del no nothing - hard restart only

tried all drivers i know of 12.1 to 12.4 and also 8.921 on its own

is this a faulty card - no overclock just factory - has dual bios

never crashes outside of games

system has been stable for 2 years with hd 5870 crossfire - upgraded and wishin i hadnt bother so far

system spec:
i7 920 (overclockers oc bundle 4ghz)
xms3 1600mhz
seagate7 baracuda 7200 1tb)
intel 520 series 240gb ssd) both hd are running separate oper sys - 1 for work and the other (ssd) for gaming (new install)
corsair hx 750w
Sapphire HD7970 OC

have done many fresh installs on new ssd and no luck

I had this problem with 12.4. One annoying thing is, updating the drivers for my 7950, I have to uninstall it from the control panel and device manager. For some reason installing over it doesn't work (which it did for my past AMD cards). Try uninstalling it with control panel + device manager, then installing the 12.3 ones?

painfully, its still happening

unistalled thru control panel + thru device manager-u were right display was still showing in device

installed 12.3 and still happening

temps not going above 55 - but sometimes fans kick high in on bsod

i tried manual fans to 80% - but still got crash ;)

Hello I had this same issue with my 7950 I found out it was my PSU two 6-pin power cables. I was using the built into PSU cables so I then changed them for another two and not had the issue since. Your using same PSU have me only I have the 850w version so am guessing yours is also a modular? If so try switching the power cables.

Hope this helps

Thanks for that shankly-ill give it a try - what do you mean by built in PSU cables tho - yeah your right mine is modular also.

could it be your cable? either the modular leading from the PSU or the splitter? are you using a splitter privded with your gfx card? or even the cable used to link it to the monitor?

I would try it on another system if at all possible. People would save a lot of time and worry if they had another system to try things on (basically test bench), or if you have friends who can load it into their computer if they dont mind you doing so to test it out on?

If you bought it from OCUK you could probably get the guys to test it or RMA it? You say you have had it a month, has it been working before?

Was having the same problem with my Sapphire 7970oc, My old mobo was crapping out on me so wanted to wait till I had my new build together just in case and it was still doing it with my new build, So I sent it back for an RMA last week, mine even did it idling in Windows and even once while I was on my BIOS screen.

Although there has been no update in my RMA account info, but I did get an email telling me they have received my card.

did you use the same memory in both new mobo and old mobo? if so it could be your ram, or possibly the VRAM, causing the black screen from reading up on it. Let us know if your returned card has any issues, and if so its probably safe to say that the card is ok but the problem lies elsewheere. Again do you have another computer to test on?

Just got an email from OCUK they have sent it back to Sapphire for repair or replacement.

It was almost a complete new build, the only thing I have kept from my old rig is the hard drives and the dvd drive.

You should have two power cables that you cant remove? there stuck in-side the psu. Hide them at the back of case and use two that come in the box and try again.

Not good unfortunately shankly, i tried all cables i have thats 4 and in turn on each pci-e slot on psu (the only cable stuck in the psu are the atx 12v and the main mobo one) i have been using the separate cables that come in box for pci-e

tried different games steam and non steam

im not using a spliter thanks chilipeppersc - just corsair pci-e cables only
no system i can try it on that has an up to date mobo for this card

had a month - has never been working properly (so darkly sad-£400 and no gaming-mom put away the razors for me) ;( joke

i might have to try a rma/test as you say - if no more ideas

bodom please let me know how you got on?

Sorry to hear that :( looks like its an Rma. The question is what you going to Rma first? gpu, that passes I still say psu because from what happened to me.
Can you get hold of another psu just for a quick test?
