the wire

Why? They literally only have it filmed on 4:3 film. There is no 16:9 picture short of letterboxing it, which would look ridiculous.

No, they filmed it on 35 mm, framed for 16:9 but mastered and re-edited it for 4:3 SD television.

Besides, it's not the sort of show that needs to be in super HD anyway.

That I agree on, would be nice to get a bit less grainy image though.

Sopranos is better.

Not even in my top 3.

I watched series 1 and to be honest I found it hard to follow because I just didn't find myself being drawn in to the characters much at all.

I might give it another go, especially as people seem to say it gets better - is series 1 generally renowned as being a bit pants compared to the rest?

For me personally, I started watching season one and after a few episodes I was like "seriously, I don't get why this show is so amazing and what people are on about". I had the boxset, so I figured I'd just give it a go. At around the 5th or 6th episode something happened in one of those and it totally hit me and now I'm hooked. Already onto season four! It is quite simply the most brilliant cop show I've ever watched, especially since you get absolutely involved in all sides of the story being told.

I think everyone should watch all of season 1. Watch it properly too, not whilst doing something else. If they still don't like it, then fair enough.

Personally, it is the best 60 hours of television I've ever seen. Even the weakest series (5) still trumps many other shows. It felt like for once I was being treated as an intelligent viewer- I actually had to pay attention, read into what the characters say and do. Surprisingly many funny moments too. New Day Coop anyone? :p

It's my favourite show of all time, but it is a slow burner and you do have to "work" at it to begin with.

Surprised to read so many testimonies that it is "slow to start" or similar.

I was just hooked from the off!!!

As many, I had difficulties to watch the first few episodes: slow, not very shiny characters, not that entertaining. I tried a few times without sucess but one day I went past episode 5 or something and that's when the story really took off I guess.

High up there as one of the best TV shows, as a lot of other HBO :)

Same. Originally I was going to watch it on BBC2, but for some reason when they ran it, it was on late at night, random start times, and a random number of episodes. I did kept catching little snippets though and despite not being aware of what was going on, I was really interested. I just got a feeling that it was very different from other things on TV. Got the box set that year.

I watched like 4 episodes and couldn't get in to it........ Worth a second try everyone seems to rave on it!!

It took me 3-4 attempts to get into Mass Effect but eventually I got hooked :D.

The hardest part about Season 1 is you are constantly thinking 'Who the **** is that' when a conversation is talking about someone. I recommend looking on IMDB to put the names to the faces of the characters.
I enjoyed watching the wire for the second time through almost as much as the first time, as I could really get engrossed in the story rather than trying to figure out what was going on.

I got S1-5 back in July 11, only managed 2 episodes but I keep meaning to watch it but when I do I always find something else and then repeat the cycle.

I WILL get around to it eventually....not like I have a lot to do otherwise. :p

I have watched The Wire twice through, best TV show I have seen. Absolutely brilliant.
To those that are struggling to get into it, you will need to concentrate when watching it and make sure you watch more than 1 episode.

I bought the first 4 seasons in 2008 or 2009 and only got round to watching it this year!
