My friends sons system is in need of an upgrade, obviously we need to do it as cost effectivley as possible.
He mostly plays WOW and various FPS games @ 1680 x 1050.
Currently, he has a 8800GT.
What would suit ?

I think the 6850 linked above it the best within the budget but i think at £130 the options of the AMD 6870 and Nvidia 560 open up and will allow him to use a lot more graphics options most or max them out at that res so are worth considering.

(for reference i'm Using a Nvidia 460 at 1680x1050 atm and i still can't justify upgradeing. Its only BF3 where i have had to turn things down to mediums)

I would honestly try second hand for such budgets. Likelyhood is that you would still get an RMA so long as the origional box is provided, you could always exchange emails with the manufacturer before purchasing ** Removed crafty hint *** probably a 6950 if lucky?

The rest of the system is getting on, but I dont think the cost of upgrading that would be worth the results ?
Currently its a Pentium E2180 @ 2.66 ghz and 2gb DDR2, I was thinking of just doubling up to 4gb ram and upgrade the graphics, to have the most noticable gains without changing the whole system.

Unfortunately the current CPU will already bottleneck the 8800GT, particularly in WOW. Upgrading to better graphic card isn't going to help with improving performance in vast majority, if not all games.

The PC at my parents with a E5200 overclock to 3.75Ghz would bottleneck my 9800GTX+ (a bit faster than the 8800GT) when I play online games/mmos. Oftenly at busy area the frame rate would drop to as low as in the low 20s, while the GPU usage is only at around 30%~40% comparing to 60-80% at not so busy areas.
