So we currently live in Low Fell, Gateshead. Recently married, and looking to move anywhere (within reason!) in the North East of England. I was brought up in the countryside in a small villiage with strong sense of community, and would lean toward this. My wife was brought up by the Sea, and would prefer to live by the coast...

Priorities:

i) Outstanding Schools - we will be having children, and this is the most important thing to us. We want to give our children the best possible start. This is an essential.
ii) Community Spirit - We want to live in a community with people who care about each other and wish to get involved in community projects.
iii) Detached house. This would be preferred, and we wouldn't mind taking on a project. We would also consider Semi-detached & terraced houses with character.
iv) Peace & quiet. We are fairly chilled out, but currently have neighbours who insist on playing Paloma Faith at 9pm so loud I can't hear myself think in my own living room. I was lucky enough to grow up in a detached house, and feel any amout of unreasonable noise would irritate me.
v) 'Forever home' - as sickmaking as this is, we want this move to be our last and for this to become the family home for the next generation. 4 bedrooms min, with a nice garden (unless building ourselves or expanding/redeveloping)

Budget is max £500k, but ideally less - bang for buck is the key here!

Areas we have looked at: Hexham, Stocksfield, Corbridge, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth.

£500k in the north east should get you something bloody fantastic shouldn't it?!

Yes and no. I felt I have come up against a wall and am just searching the same areas over and over again to find nothing worth getting excited about. Really keen to see if there are areas I have missed, up-and-coming areas or perhaps I'm missing the wood for the trees?

I am originally from the North West, and my wife from Northern Ireland, so although we have both lived here 10+ yrs, we are not 'locals' so to speak.

I grew up in Morpeth, Northumberland. Nice part of the world, although possibly a little larger than you were looking for, the outlying areas such as Mitford and Ponteland could be more your thing.

There are plenty of coastal towns although there are some rough areas along the coast too.

So did I and I concur. Commuting from there is relatively straight forward as you are just off the A1 and there are plenty of small towns and villages nearby that would suit if Morpeth isn't quite right.

Another alternative for me would be up the Tyne Valley; somewhere like Heddon on the Wall towards Prudhoe, or depending on price then Corbridge.

Grimsby/cleethorpes ;) 500k will make you stand out around here some nice places. Has a lot of academy's going up etc but i can't say much for community spirit :/ by the sea though!

I'd recommend Beverley, Cherry Burton or Tickton which are all around 10-12 miles outside of Hull. Tickton is seriously nice especially! Beverley has loads of places to eat and drink even though its a village. In terms of coastline, bridlington is around 20 minutes drive from any of these places which has an amazing beach, tonnes of parking right next to it and the best fish and chips you'll ever have in your life.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough...by North East, perhaps stupidly, I meant Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland and County Durham.

Some great ideas so far, so thank you. The Tyne Valley is preferred, and Morpeth is also a real contender. The issue with Morpeth is flooding, and we would obviously want to avoid that at all costs!

I'd never live in newcastle or durham due to the calibre of chav that breeds there. Northumberland is far better and you can get quite a lot for your money there also.

You obvsiouly aren't familiar with Durham.

(And coming from Hull too..... come on...... ;) )

Aha, Durham is a lovely place in the region. I'm from more of the tees area so can't be much help I'm afraid.
