As I said, only watering your garden or cleaning your car are covered by the ban. Thames Water (and you right now) probably wish it covered more but it doesn't.

I don't blame people for being confused, after all it's in the water companies interest to let people carry on thinking hose pipes themselves are banned so it's not like they're shouting the actual law from the roof tops.

drawing water, using a hosepipe, for domestic recreational use;
filling or maintaining a domestic pond (excluding fish ponds) using a hosepipe;
filling or maintaining an ornamental fountain;
cleaning walls, or windows, of domestic premises using a hosepipe;
cleaning paths or patios using a hosepipe;
cleaning other artificial outdoor surfaces using a hosepipe.

So no, it's not only garden and cars, it includes well pretty much everything with a hosepipe, including washing down patios/driveways.

Researching a bit more, seems law was amended in 2010 (FWMA2010)

So you can't fill a swimming pool with a hosepipe, but you can fill a swimming pool if you use buckets and fill it from the tap?

And did you read the exemption bit at the bottom which basically admits that you can use it but they'd like you not to?

What Anglian Water would like and what the law says are two different things.
 
IF it's breaking the law the fill a swimming pool with a hose yet it's ok the fill it with multiple bucket loads of water then that's just retarded. It uses the same amount of water from the same source. Also a quick rinse of the car after washing it to get rid of all the soap suds is hardly wasteing gallons of water.

Did you read the bit where your article is from 2006 and the law was amended in 2010.

Legislation:
All eleven activities are covered by the Water Industry Act 1991 section 76 as amended by the FWMA 2010 (i.e. temporary water use bans).
“Using a hosepipe”
The Water Use (Temporary Bans) Order 2010 provides the definition of “using a hosepipe” in relation to the Water Industry Act 1991 as including:
a) Drawing relevant water through a hosepipe from a container and applying it for the purpose; and
b) Filling or partly filling a container with relevant water by means of a hosepipe and applying it for the purpose.
A reference to a hosepipe includes anything designed, adapted or used for the same purpose as a hosepipe (Section 76A(5) of the Water Industry Act 1991).
“Relevant water” refers to mains water i.e. supplied by the water undertaker; it does not include water supplied before the water use restriction was implemented.

IIRC most water boards give an exemption if you are, as long as you're being sensible, something to do with the fact that if you're healthy you can still use a watering can to keep your pots etc watered, but often not if you have mobility problems.

My thoughts exactly I am a blue badge holder. I can legally use a hosepipe but solely me. So you couldn't come water plants for me! :D
 
One of the first things i'm going to do in the garden when we move out of this flat and buy a house next year is install a water butt up to the guttering. With a tap and hose attachment. Could fill it now and then from the main supply as well, who'd know? ;)

If its big enough, you wouldn't need to. Add a filter and pump and your good to go.
