In acme's chair.
My mate bought an XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 Single Slot Edition from here maybe a year or so ago (?) and it is running at 70*C idle and hitting 98*C under load.

I know that this isnt normal, and that something is amiss because those temps are CRAZY hot for a 5770...

He assures me that the fan is spinning and the card is inserted correctly and that it is not overclocked at all etc

His case is a Packard Bell iMedia case which has no exhaust fans (bar the power supply) as the card was bought as an upgrade for his home PC.

The weather at the moment is boiling (room temps of maybe 20 - 25*C in his flat because his windows are all jammed), so i am guessing that it is just a combination of bad ventilation and high ambient room temperature. But despite this, those temps are still shocking! even in those conditions i would only expect maybe 80*C

Those temps are with the side of the case off with the PC in an area with lots of space around it, the graphics card is not being blocked by any other expansion cards.

You said that your mate bought that card a year or so ago, so, were the temps so high during this time??..

If not, then maybe he should replace the thermal compound of the card..

Other thing: which kind of PSU he has??.. Maybe it is overvolting the card.. "El cheapo" PSUs could do that.. ;)

Best regards.. :)

I don't think it was running that hot back then.

His PSU is an OCZ StealthXtreme 500W

Oh yeah, he upgraded the PSU as well. The old one was a 250W without the right connectors.

Only bought OCZ cos it was on a this week only and similarly priced ones had less connectors and wattage etc

Just like i only got mine cos it was £38 brand new :D

Open up the cooler. The single slot coolers usually have the dust trapped inside the card. And Packard Bell cases aren't very good for airflow either... maybe consider a cheap case upgrade?

yes but it is still under warranty, wont doing that void it? And he really has no money whatsoever at the moment. He is planning on doing a bit of upgrading (including the case) in the future... (new case, new motherboard, new CPU)

Cos at the moment its something like this...

New stuff:

OCZ StealthXtreme II 500W
G.Skill Ripjaws 8GB
Radeon HD 5770

Old Stuff:

Generic (seems to be unbranded  ) motherboard [chuck]
Packard Bell iMedia chassis [chuck]
Seagate (?) 640GB HDD [keep]
Generic DVD-RW drive [keep]
Intel Core i3 530 (2.93GHz) [chuck]
Stock cooler [chuck]

Give the card a couple of blasts of compressed air to clear out dust thats trapped in the heatsink and if that doesn't bring down temps enough get a 120mm fan to blow air over it.

This. If you're worried about voiding warranty, then give this a go.

But really, that case is doing the 5770 no favours.

When Civ 5 originally came out my Vapour-X 5770 hit three figures  and regulary sweltered in the 90's.

I always thought the problem was related to the graphics card drivers not controlling the onboard fan correctly. The card was certainly quiet, but that was because the fan would never rev up automatically. I don't know if the problem was ever solved or not.

I had to resort to MSI Afterburner to get some control over the temps.

could get him to take the side pannel off + desktop fan blowing right into it ghetto style, i remember having to do this a few years ago with a packard bell case that had no vents apart from the PSU (more than likely the same case)

an iExtreme... :p

Cant you cut some fans into the case as its going to be chucked sometime? Prolly just needs a clean with some air then maybe set up some more aggressive fan profiles along with a extra fan or 2 cut into the case.

Hello guys, as it turns out, my friend is a bit of a douche and he had his fans set up with a maximum of 50%... He now has them on 75% and the temps have dropped to something a lot more normal looking... Jesus Christ...

Thats classed as boiling? before this hot weather one of the rooms was always 18 - 20c. Thats not hot. Hot right now reading one of the room temperature thermometers is 28c with no AC with every window and door wide open.

well maybe 30*C then lol i dunno

While increasing the fan helps, as the guys mentioned he should see if he can get the dust out as well. The chances are there is already a dust carpet lying on the heatsink after a year of usage...
