...Sadly it'll be in a 2011 Avensis Tourer. I've driven it, and it's gutless indeed. What I need to know (by 9am tomorrow) is will it return 38 mpg+ on a run.

My 2.2 Diesel only returns 38 mpg, so anything 38+ on petrol is going to be better.

Depends what you mean by a run. If you mean a Motorway trip at around the speed limit I'd be amazed if it couldnt do 38mpg.

I do a round trip most days of 60 odd miles Leeds to York, A1M/A64 at 70-75. That kind of run.

I have a 1.8 vvti from 2005.
After 4 years of ownership, my overall average, which I never ever reset in all that time was 37.5 mpg. That was 50% motorway 50% other.

Thanks it does. Surprised at the Celica comment, I thought they put a hot version of the 1.8 in there rather than the family friendly estate cruising version.

Keep up the examples though. I'm still thinking hard about this - seems completely alien to go with a massive estate car and small(ish) petrol engine.

Surly if you can get the petrol at ~ the same MPG, this will return a saving in servicing etc over a few years? and be more reliable than your current vag?

My 2001 1.8 VVTi avensis estate returns 37 mpg on my local commute of 25 miles round trip mostly at 55 + mph with around 3 miles of that being 30mph

Yes that's my plan. I do hold the official figures in very low esteem, so wanted to check that 39.2 combined didn't really mean 30 on a good day. I must admit having big family diesels and company motors for years - petrol is a bit alien to me.

Having been stung buying the wife's Fiat 500 TwinAir : supposedly 60+mpg - actually 40MPG, and the 2.2 Diesel I have now that's 38MPG on a good day, supposed to be 50 odd.

So you can see why I'm wanting MPG examples from normal people now!

My Yaris also have the 1.8L VVT-i engine.

last 6 weeks' fuel.

That is a combination of around 5% within city centre, the rest are a mix of 60mph on NSL or motorway around 70mph.

38mpg is achievable.

The 27mpg one at the bottom, lets just say i had a heavy foot that 1 journey lol

Having said that, the Yaris weight a lot less than a Tourer.

Oh I should say, that on a short test drive, cold start, 5 up (family + sales guy) around town in traffic I got 34, so my commuting run is bound to be a hell of a lot better.

Thanks for that. Are you quite enthusiastic with your right foot?

Oh the good old days of my Clio 182 and 33 mpg no matter how hard I ragged it!

I am not THAT heavy footed.

In town I get up to the highest gear I can get away with without stalling. The car would judders at 30mph at 5th so within city centre I go around 4th gear and under but when I am outside it, I tend to go at the safest speed the condition allows. I won't go 80 in a 60 but i also don't go around doing 45.

I say i am average, although I tend to get there on average about 5 mins per hour quicker than what the Tom Tom's predicted time on a long trip.

Yep, it's barge like in comparison, maybe even aircraft carrier.

I would take a stab that if I drive the same way in your car....about 35/36mpg would be average with the extra weight.

Btw, if say i brim the tank JUST as I leave the city centre, which resets the average MPG counter on the dash, and then I cruise along at 70mph, the average on the motorway is about 41/42mpg.

oh, the reading on the 13th of May. That was the day when I drove from Hereford to East London and then back (filled up in Oxford services on the way back).

But in that includes 20miles on the North Circular on the way in, I took the M25 on the way out.

Hope that give you an idea.

I used to pretty much alwaus sit around 35mpg in the little mr2, I dont really do economical driving so if you tried I dont see why you couldn't match it in an avensis.

Be warned though, that will be a horrible, horrible thing to drive. Its one thing the vvti pulling along a 1 tonne ragtop, the avensis will kill it.
