my daughters 8520 curve has developed the "white screen of death" , we bought it last year 3/5/2011 , im aware that o2 wouldnt deal with us as it had passed the standard 12 month supplier warranty, however im quite shocked to find that blackberrys manufacturer warranty is also only 12 months ? this is the imprssion im getting from google searches

surely that cant be right ? dont they have to offer atleast 24 months warranty by UK law ? i cant find anywhere that says they offer more than 12 months :(

has any one sent a BB back after the initial 12 months period ?

Ermmm usually BB warranties are 24mths...all my BB's have had a 24mth warranty, not that i have ever had to use them.

Best ring up your network and find out from them what the warranty period is on a BB. Otherwise maybe a shot at ringing up Blackberry and see what they say.

But if they only say 12mth then i guess thats what it is but my 9780 from VF and 9900 both have 24mth warranties as far as i was told.

Mind you the 8520 is cheap to replace so maybe just pick up another one, instead of faffing around getting it fixed.

Yeah it's 12 months funny enough - http://uk.blackberry.com/legal/handheld_warranty.jsp
the BlackBerry Hardware will be free from defects in workmanship and materials for a period that concludes one (1) year from the date that the BlackBerry Hardware was first purchased by YOU as an original end-user (the “Warranty Period”).
It's not the law to be 2 years, it's unfortunately a "recommendation" I believe. Did you phone up RIM ask them about it? You might get some goodwill out of it (Real slim chance).

There's no law for a 24 month warranty. Outside of the normal warranty (in fact I think it might even be outside 6 months) YOU have to prove there was a pre existing fault when you purchased it.

I know this might be cold comfort but you could probably get an 8520 for peanuts.

I'm pretty sure under European law it has to be 2 years.

See page 7

http://ec.europa.eu/publications/booklets/move/64/en.pdf

Therefore, if you took legal action they would lose. It is precisely for this reason a lot of manufacturer warranties in the UK have been increasing to at least 2 years.

Also as mentioned, who is liable to prove a fault exists (or not) changes over time. However, if you allow this then UK consumer rights are far superior as you have up to 6 years.

I pretty sure VF themselves give the 24mth warranty rather than RIM, I vaguely remember that being what I read when I got my BB with them.

well my wife took the phone into o2 today to see if they could do anything, they reckon its got water damage but my daughter swears its been no where near water,so either way they wouldnt replace the phone , now to add insult to injury the sim card has packed up even tho it was working briefly in another BB :(

Could be right there, in fact you are as i gave my 9780 to a friend of mine and twice ive had to take it back for her to get it fixed and the phone was definitely over the yr warranty which is standard.

My 9900 that i bought from CPW comes with a 24mth warranty, asked when i bought it last year. a lot of online places that were selling the 9900 were also giving 24mth warranties. But if something does happen to the phone, sadly my 9900 developed a fault so took it back to CPW, where they said it had to be sent to RIM for them to fix it or replace it. Only thing is it could take up to 2-3 weeks :(. Hoping that this week sometime i get mine back or a new one.

Have you plugged it to BB Desktop Manager software?
White screens are usually corrected after a wipe and firmware update.

Dont mean to hijack the thread but facing a similar problem and trying to help a friend. She has a blackberry and it has developed a software fault where it cant add/edit bbm or open/text contacts. Contract was 24 months under Orange and they say nothing can be done to contact RIM (its about 15 months into the contract) What is the best protocol/ course of action? Surely a software bug is different from that of a hardware bug ...Any tips on fixing would be welcomed (not too fluent with BB but will pass on advice!) Thanks

posssibly try to wipe the handset,if you cant navigate to any option on the phone because of the software issue then you can try something like this

and wipe it thru the computer, download the latest or the phones current OS version, and reinstall it via the pc too

yup tried that, no joy :(

EDIT:strangely enough the BDM wouldnt connect to the phone at all when i tried it the other day, now it seems to be connecting so i managed to save her data, gunna try to wipe and install FW/OS again
