8gb Or 16gb Of RAM?

Will 8GB dual channel RAM work on a quad-channel motherboard e.g. Rampage IV Extreme?

Feel like that's probably a dumb question but I'd like to be sure.

Yes.
If it is 2 DIMMs worth of RAM then it will be dual channel only. If 4 DIMMs worth then you'll get full quad channel.

I have 2x8Gb dual channel kits (4x4Gb) in my X79 system.

Yes, it will be fine. I have four 8GB dual channel kits running in quad-channel mode without issue.

Unless you use things like Auto-cad or virtual machines I don't think you will ever need 16GB, 8GB is enough but if you can afford it id get a 16GB kit, 2 x 8GB modules, as it can never hurt to have more Ram ^^

Idiot's question, does switching between 8 & 16 mean you have to change many settings & limit the over clock you can have?

I am currently running a 2700 at 4.7 with 8 GB (2x4) of Corsair Ballistix ram @ 9,9,9,28 @ 1600 if I went to 16 what would I have to do to the settings?

**EDIT** it's all on a ASUS p77V7 DELUXE board if that matters.

When I went from 8 to 16 it made no difference, but I'm no expert and might have got lucky

Whenever I build a computer for myself, friends or clients I normally follow these "guidelines":

4GB RAM = General usage, internet browsing, entertainment, web browsing, light gaming etc
8GB RAM = More powerusers. Heavy design software, heavy gaming, heavy multitasking etc.
16GB+ RAM = Those who feel 8GB is not enough and use a lot of video editing tools, heavy developing software, rendering etc. Although, 8GB for all this should be fine.

Personally I would save the £30/£40 and just get 8GB. It's more than enough for most of today's tasks.

I remember when it was you only need 2GB for general stuff, then 4GB, now 8GB? LOL

Seriously, 8GB is the sweet spot for a gaming PC but I only noticed one performance increase in load times playing BF3 all other games there was no difference from 4GB.

16GB is only needed for epeen, or professional 3D/rendering/photoshop computer work. I use 8GB ram in my work PC rendering 1080p HD video in Sony Vegas, and that's still plenty enough for what I do. I would imagine you would need to be doing something pretty high tech to make use of a whole 16GB of ram!

I want 16GB but jeez the prices are so high compared to a couple of months ago.

Anyone know the cause of the big price increase over the last month or so?

I upgraded from 8gb to 24gb. The most usage I have seen so far was something like 8.9gb,lol.

I still am glad for the upgrade, even though it seems maybe 8gb would have been enough and is more cost effective. I would rather have too much to future proof.

I used to max out the 16GB on my XPS 17 laptop with a few Linux VMs but I recently sold it and this temporary ITX desktop system only has 4GB so I want to buy 2 x 8GB for it.
