Insurance query

I have just insured my car with a different company and the policy came yesterday.

Now the have got the start date as June 09th at midnight and i told them it wanted to start on June 10th at 12.01am as my current policy expires on June 10th at midnight.

This means that for one day i will have two policies with different insurers, is this legal as i don't want any hassle.

technically it is illegal, but I wouldn't lose sweat over it. Just ring up and ask for a day later if your bothered.

It will be if you have an accident and claim on both

So you thought 12.01 on June 10th made it June 11th?

I wouldn't worry about it. If you do crash. Just don't claim twice.

Having two insurance policies is not illegal.

For example, here's what Bell have to say about dual insurance:

If you have other insurance which covers the same liability, loss or damage we will only pay the share of the claim that is attributable to this policy. This does not apply to personal injury benefits.

Can you point me to the Act of Parliament, Order, Regulation or other Statutory Instrument that states that having two insurance policies on a vehicle is illegal?

If there isn't one, then it can't be illegal.

Far to many people on Internet forums state "that's illegal" when they wouldn't know what a Statutory Instrument was if it came out and whacked them around the face. What you read on another forum or your mate told you down the pub isn't necessarily true!

I don't believe it's illegal. It may cause contractual issues with the two insurers in the event of a claim as to who pays out, but I don't think there is a law against it.

That should be fine, the policies will have a clause to prevent you from claiming on the same item twice, so you wont be in a better financial position that you would with one policy.

Kinda like theft or damage to personal property can be covered by both Travel Insurance and Home Insurance and you can be entitled to claim off either for certain items.

You could always just phone either one of your insurers if you are too worried about it, and to be honest even if it was illegal and you told your new insurer that your old policy doesnt expire until x date then they shouldnt or wouldnt have sold you the new one and given it the start date that they have
