Hey I've heard stories that if a battery is not charged up to 100% before the first use it can damage it... any truth to this? seems to be a 50/50 split between yes and no :S
May apply to some batteries but its not a general rule.
From my experience calibration can be a bit off if you don't fully charge and mostly discharge (I don't reccomend entirely discharging) for the first few charge cycles on a new battery. Fully charging before first use definitely seems to produce better initial results but I don't think its something that can't be rectified later (with most batteries).
doesn't the whole 100% charge thing apply to modern batteries?
I Just bought the htc one x and switched it on first time without charging it for about a minute just to register the sim. I then left it for about 2 hours and had to take it off charge at 80% because i was going out and needed the phone. think this will cause any problems such as the battery draining quicker or a shorter life span?
There are no issues with partial charging in Lithium battery's. It is only the older NiCd batterys that have a cystal build up if it is not fully charged and discharged. I think its still good for the battery's overal "cycle" life to have full charges but there is no adverse effects with partial charging.
I don't tend to bother with such things, i do how ever discharge and fully recharge to the battery the first couple of times to make sure everything is calibrated properly.
Oh how I chortle when I see people go "I got my shiny new phone and it really want to play but I gotta give it the first 9 hour charge before I can even turn it on!".
Won't damage it, but as said above it might make the battery calibration a bit iffy. Most user manuals recommend letting it fully charge, but it doesn't need to be left charging for hours on end after that.
