2560x1440 gaming

When we say maxed it means field of view 90, HBAO, 16X and 4 x and motion on, at 2560 x1440. XFX 7970 xfire at 1125mhz 1575mhz can do this with vsync on at 60fps all day long, you just kidding your self, you think 20 to 83 fps better i dont think so, so no one 7970 cannot play BF3, you may as well drop it to 1920 x 1080.

But it plays fine so why am I kidding myself ? I have played hours of BF3 on all the maps and not once have I thought I need another GPU to make it playable. I don't get 20fps and it looks fine ? It might not be good enough for the "must be 60fps or it is broke" club but it is perfectly fine for me. Everyone has a different opinion and experience with how games run so there will always be a difference of opinion.

so no one 7970 cannot play BF3

This is just a little bit silly tbh. Yes it can, possibly not at a constant 60fps but it plays, and plays very well...

Fine is ok, but that's just justifying it, it takes a lot more to be satisfied with it. Thats why i spend a grand. Go xfire the see what you missed out on. Dont mix words at max you cannot justify it. The latest single GPU just aint enough on its own sorry.

Well done you spent a grand to play BF3 how lovely. I have run it crossfire on a pair of 6950's and also a pair of 680's and yes it gave better results on both systems but not to any degree that made me think my god I need another GPU to play this.
Like I said difference of opinion or maybe justifying a big spend, Mine runs fine so I'm happy if you feel you need 2 x 7970's to get the best from the game then that's great too but not everyone is going to feel the same.

My whole point was recommending someone tried a single 7970 or 680 with a 1440p screen before buying another gpu as they may like me be happy with the performance and feel an extra £360+ spend is not required.

Its just the truth, i could play it with a HD 5970 max at low res but we talking about high res, big money Monitor and GPU and you just scrapping the bottom of the barrel at this res, don't kid yourself, you are happy full marks to you, but you are (£400 or so) short of the full experience full stop.
On your advise i would buy a 7970, 680 etc, but i did and was not as happy with gaming as you were, so there is something to be considered at this res.

Not having a person dig at you just telling others how it could be or how it is.

Hey Moogleys, no need for a ruck but the replies are based around what was in the original post.

"I would like to say though I'm the sort of person who likes all settings all the way maxed in games and with at-least 4xAA."

BTW I bought three of the buggers so i can get 120fps avg in 1080p :P

You are just as bad 3 7970`s thats just for Unigine you poser. With vysnc you cannot do better than 60fps what ever you have lol. Original post yes but at lower in game settings, or stay at 1920x 1080 and max it, what ever you thing looks better.
Just for another example ran a i7 920 at 3.8ghz with xfire 7970 and still got 60fps vsync at 2560x1440 so you can count out CPU bottleneck out with BF3, just the same at 4.5ghz with vsync.

3 x 7970's is just insane but cool.....

Really bad video showing that BF3 can infact be played at 1440p max settings with a single 7970....:D I had a better one but for some reason it wont upload. Fraps also seems to make the videos do weird things and youtube is just a pain so I gave up..

Perhaps fraps in a corner and a bigger land map, been there done it, spend more to do it better.
Yes it can be done, but even by your own admission drops to 38 fps, at this res and this much money is it acceptable, by your admissions yes, by others no.

Two spend nearly a grand on monitor and GPU and still drop to 38 fps is a big fail. No one is to blame you just have to spend more to get more.

I'm still not arguing just telling it how it is at hi-res .

Look im not be funny or anything i went from a 5970 + 5870 trifire at 1080 maxed everything. Purchased a 1440 monitor and because of vram i got 11 fps in BF3 and Skyrim etc maxed, it all depends on what you want, one GPU will do it, but don't expect miracles, 2560x1440 needs sli or xfire to get the best out of it or dont bother stay at 1080 it a lot smoother fps wise

Wow top man then i applaud you, very fine buy indeed, better than my £1500, care to share?

7970 was from here when the %10 discount was going on and they were on offer so worked out just over £300 the monitor is a PCbank from Korea that was just over £200 but I had £50 odd refunded as it died and I had it fixed. :D

Thanks for all the comments everyone greatly appreciate it.

I think I will be taking the plunge and getting the 2x 670's as soon as the EK waterblocks are back available, I know some have said it will be playable etc on a single card but as others have said spending all that money on the monitor and single GPU for the fps to drop into the 30's or even the 20's at times isn't what I want to see.

Once again thanks everyone for all your replies and comments, it's been greatly appreciated.

Couldn't agree with MOOGLEYS point more if I tried. One thing he kept repeating over and over though lots of people conitinually ignored that part which was:

To get 1x 670 or whatever and try it with a 1440p monitor, if not happy THEN get another. Don't just get two because a benchmarks says x,y,z. Most sensible plan of action by miles....

That's exactly what I did and I found that a single GTX680 wasn't enough for gaming at 2560x1600. I had performance issues in numerous games, like Alan Wake, The Witcher 2, Crysis 2, Dragon Age II, etc. At the same time I could max out games like Skyrim, DiRT3, Bulletstorm, Civilization V and Deus Ex: Human Revolution and they played great. I ended up getting a second card and it made a world of difference. Even now though there are still poorly optimised games that play appallingly, like BRINK, and GTAIV isn't completely smooth like it should be.

Going for two 670s is a good move as it will be considerably better for gaming.

I have 480 SLI running BF3 perfectly at 2560x1440. OP I would highly recommend a second 580 to complement your existing setup, and wait for the next wave of GPUs from Green and Red teams. Imo.

Going for 2x 670s may end up being the right move for him but just getting it straight away just because a few ppl on a forum and benhcmarks say so is a bit silly imo. Get one (like you did) try it (like you did) and if not happy, then get another (like you did). That was MOOGLEYS point that you did it the right way and going SLi straight away might be unnecessary.
