Getting married at the beginning of August and looking at honeymoon destinations. We like the look of resorts near Cancun but have heard this is hurricane season - what's it really like at that time of year?

Wouldn't go to Cancun, too many partying Americans, better to go a bit further down to the Riviera Maya which is more laid back and the storms seem to miss the area more.

trust me then check the place out I linked :)

assuming you don't have kids that is as they don't allow them

Stayed in the Grand Palladium Colonial Resort & Spa in 2009 (November), was fantastic, second the comments about Chichen Itza.

I would stay away from Cancun, unless thats the sort of holiday you're looking for (drinking and loud Americans)

I went to cancun (actually riviera maya) last year in november and it was absolutely fantastic, as others have said do Chichen Itza etc and also consider a boat trip round to some of the local islands, that was a very nice chilled day out. Think the weather can be hit and miss in August, and as others have said consier first choice/thomas cook. Go and enjoy, fantastic place.

Just back having had a week in florida and a week in Cancun

Was also at the very sink hole pictured above!

Weather was poor in Cancun, it was cloudy most days and rained one way or the other everyday so weather is very hit and miss.
Had a few half days of sun

We were all inclusive so didnt venture out to the Bars much, went out for the champions league final as it was raining very heavily all day

Do the pirate ship dinner and snorkeliing the reef, both were excellent

Wouldn't rush back TBH now that we've done it.....felt like Tenerife in the end without the sun

Did Hawaii for our honeymoon, fantastic weather and id move there tomorrow!
Maui for chilling then Honolulu with a car to drive round the island, was awesome
Stopped over at San Francisco on way out and DC on the way back to break up the flights which worked out great too, .
Got into the White House for the public tour, it snowed in washington, about a foot in 24 hrs, was a quick change from Maui :D

I went to Cancun in 2008 for 12 nights and stayed in the Riu Cancun which had a number of bars and places to eat which was good, it also had it's own private beach. I didn't really enjoy it but I mostly think this was due to my so called mates not wanting to venture out at night time etc. Fair enough, we were in an all inclusive resort but this not venturing out business really pee'd me off. I remember on one of the mornings, everyone had a bad hangover and I threw the head up and got a taxi and went to Walmart by myself which I've always wanted to do :) Only thing was, I can only speak english and I didn't know how I was going to get back but thankfully the taxi driver said that he would wait and wouldn't charge me any more, just the fare up and back :)

We did do some of the excursions - quad biking, cliff diving.. well actually it was a zip line but I fell an nearly wrecked myself haha. Speed boat and deep see diving. The quad biking was absolutely brilliant, by far the best part of the trip... now, what does that say?

So yeah, I wouldn't personally go to Cancun if it were my honeymoon... I would choose somewhere romantic.

What about somewhere like Turks and Caicos or Antigua?

Forget Cancun and head to Cabo.

I stayed here as part of my honeymoon last year http://www.zoetryresorts.com/casadelmar/

Was outstanding. Mrs ate fillet steak every night :D

It was in mid-July and the humidity was insane but overall the weather was nice.

Looks fantastic but so does the price!

Think we will head down to Riviera Maya based on the suggestions above. :) The weather doesn't seem to be as big an issue as is made out.
