Hey guys,

How viable/safe do you think this would be?

Trying to get as far away from your home town as possible without spending any of their own money on transportation.

Is it still safe to hitchhike in Europe?

Just looking for opinions and ideas really :p

Dan

There is a 'race'(?) that follows a similar format.
Can't remember what it's called tho.

It's a fairly common idea for a charity event, held by quite a few different student associations I believe - 24 hours to get as far as possible while spending nothing. You get some ridiculous stories about where people have ended up :)

As with all properly organised events, there's a lot of emphasis on being safe etc. Similar for the hitchhikes to Morocco/Prague, it sounded fun, but I hated the idea from the rules that you had to phone up home every 48 hours to check in, so we just did it ourselves a few weeks later :) Safe? Sure, if you're sensible, there's a lot of pretty basic rules to follow, largely coming down to never feeling obliged you have to take a lift if you're not comfortable with it, and ideally not being alone...

Edit/ Have a Google for Jailbreak, or have a look at the Cambridge guide on it.

Fifov, read about some guys getting to Singapore in 36 hours, that's crazy!

Work aren't renewing my contract, and I really need a holiday and have no friends with money, so might just back a bag and walk out the house one day towards the end of July and see where I end up :)

Any tips on getting onto the continent for the cheapest possible price?

Swim :p

seriously though, megabus. A couple of quick quotes show lots of £4 tickets for London > Paris in July.

Jailbreak is do-able because you can say it's for charity so people are more willing to help. It'd be much more difficult if you were just on a jolly.

Yes, but would you really want to be stuck on a bus until Paris with people who paid £4 for a ticket? It would be like a travelling zoo! :D

The OP asked for the cheapest way, not the way with the least amount of peasants and servant-folk. :p

Most unis do some form of this with a RAG society or similar

Its llooks lots of fun, and the winners are usually the people who have the least fun

I.e winner from manchester last year went to the airport and cried, got a flight to china and won. but was a 24 hour and one flight, how boring.

Most interested ones from what i've heard are people who hitchike down to dover etc jump in a car going through the tunnel and end up in all sorts of places out east

One suitcase + one hand luggage. If you're hitch hiking and stuff, you really want to have as little stuff as possible.

Was just thinking a 60l rucksack with tent+sleeping bag :)

Also another idea, anyone have any opinions or thoughts on the all-over Europe train tickets you can get?

Might allow me to see more in a shorter space of time :)

Plenty of threads on here about Interrailing, I did it a few years ago (6 weeks). Just covered western Europe but it was fantastic. Not cheap, in the slightest, though! But you can do it on the cheap I suppose.

Looks to be about 800 quid for 3 months, which didn't seem to bad overall tbh.

This was from EURail.com, and is everyday for the 3 months :)

Do you have Skype mate? Would love to ask some questions :)

Aye, the train pass is pretty good value for money (arguably, you can get it cheaper booking stuff individually but I think the pass gives you greater flexibility).

However, if you end up eating out every night (as we did), drinking a lot (as we did) and everything else then the money rapidly adds up! I suppose you can stay in hostels, do the cheap stuff and not live too extravagantly but it may be troublesome in Western Europe. I spent thousands in the 6 weeks.

Na, don't use Skype. Feel free to get me through trust though.

Yeah i'm going to be hosteling and camping as much as possible I imagine, have a few friends dotted about I could stay with so going to be using those as milestones I think :)

Yeah I reckon it could be cheaper, but I like the idea of just deciding to move on randomly one day :p
