D Day

We've already forgotten, a long time ago. Not the sacrifice or heroism (the bits that make good movies) but the reasons behind the war and why institutions like the UN and later the EU were created.

Thank god for nukes is all I'll say. They'll kill us all one day but until then they keep the peace.

Yes, well said.

We need a new WWII fps. I miss playing bf1942 and flying planes that had propellers rather than jets. Also why do the modern battlefield games not have the movable subs and ships that 1942 did.

I mad.

Never forget that all who died are the true hero's.

The sad thing is they still don't have truly accurate figures for the total allied casualties on D Day. It's typically between 9,000 and 10,000 killed or wounded from the Allied troops but the American D Day memorial foundation is trying to get more accurate figures and believes this figure should be much higher.

Watched Saving Private Ryan again the other night.. The beach assult scene is pretty hard to watch. While i understand its a movie, from what i hear that scene is very authentic... I really hope in my lifetime that we do not have to endure the horrific scenes from those days..

Unlike the Hero's today who get obe's for being a celeb!

That really ****es me off about modern society. You make a song using heavy autotune and you just happen to be somewhere between attractive and stunning in looks and you are by default a hero. No talent, not done anything of worth but you can use autotunes and look pretty.

Guy dives backpack first onto a land mine he set off to save his comrades. Gets spoke about by a few for a day or so. End of.

Someone makes an autotune song. Country rallies to get them a knighthood. *****?

Important to remember while we are witnesses to the same type of environment which led to WWII, and that most have decided to ignore (even when quoting :( )

Let's not forget.

Perhaps you should be thanking all those who gave their lives to fight for your freedom so you can play your games? I'd much sooner speak to a veteran and hear some real stories than play MOHAA or the like. Have some respect, seriously..

I don't think we're headed for WW3 anytime soon. Until someone develops some method of guaranteed stoppage of a nuclear assault nobody will be starting THAT kind of war. It's weird how the very things that could end our existence at the push of a button are the same things preserving that existence.

Remembered and honoured.

I'm also listening to the audiobook version of "Brotherhood of Heroes" by Bill Sloan, which covers the US Marine's battles on Peleliu. I had never heard of this before watching "The Pacific" but the casualties and horror are staggering. Brave, brave folks.

I'm pretty anti-military - but those who fought against that kind of ethnic cleansing deserve to be remembered with honour & dignity.

Nothing like soldiers of today, these people didn't pick to fight for a wage, they didn't have a choice - it was literally to defend family & friends from a hostile force.

It's a shame that we have trampled all over the memory with the illegal wars, stealing of resources from the third world & the growing trend of racist nationalism.

Disagree entirely. Even modern conflicts have people of extraordinary courage and valour that should never be forgot.
I have to disagree.

The courage of the individual is meaningless if the war is based off a lie or ethically wrong.

You can't murder civilians & steal resources from another country & be honourable about it, regardless of how much we like to gloss over the actions of the fighters.

Brave some of them, yes - misguided & unaware of what they are doing - perhaps - but honourable to fight an unjust war? - no.

Would a Nazi who jumped on a grenade to awarded the title honourable (if they partook in the slaughter of civilians?), or a suicide bomber on that note?.

The motivation behind the reason to be there needs to be taken into account, nobody is forcing anybody to be in the military these days, so I consider them no better than mercenaries.

But in response to this topic, then I agree 100% - they should be held in honour these great men & women.

So courage & valour yes - honour, no.
