***** Pictures of things we bought in June 2012 *****

I had two crashes, both at 60mph, both with my body stopping extremely quickly, absorbing the full impact, and my injuries were limited to a fractured little finger (which may only have been bruised) and a slightly bruised knee.

Of course, it very much depends on what you hit and how you hit it, but if you wear the right gear, you're sensible and attentive, you're unlikely to come to any harm.

Hmm, I'm not quite so sure. I know a number of people who wear correct gear and have had quite bad accidents which have ended badly.

I note you mention the gear, but you don't mention the other 2 criteria. :p

Like I said, if you're not an idiot, don't speed and keep an eye out for other idiots pulling out of side junctions, then most of it is in your own hands. You can never be completely safe of course, and you can't always react to the mistakes of others, or predict the rabbit or deer running out from the verge. Perhaps part of it is down to the mentality of drivers in your area (we live in the green of Northumberland, among the B and C roads - of course on a motorway things are different).

Sadly, it usually takes an accident to make many bikers aware of their vulnerability, and often it only takes one accident. I know my awareness went up tenfold after my 2nd accident, where a driver pulled out of a junction without looking. Every since, my eyes have been on stalks.
