Hi,

I'm getting an issue with my board (in fairness I'm presuming it's the motherboard at fault) where sometimes when I turn my PC on it takes a long time to post. Once it does it's fine though. Other times the PC boots but neither of my monitors turn on.

Also I'm running 670 SLI so if I have a 3rd monitor connected to the 2nd card then sometimes when the above happens the 2 monitors o nthe 1st card don't turn on, btu the monitor on the 2nd card does.

It sort of seems to me like the system is having trouble detecting the first graphics card sometimes.

Sometimes I turn it on and it all works fine.

Does anyone else get this?
I should probably point out that I'm using a Corsair AX1200 PSU, so don't think lack of power should be an issue.

My other query, is what settings do people use for the Southbridge (PCH?) fan?
I think mine sits at around 4000rpm most of the time. When gaming I don't notice it too badly, but when the PC is idle or just doing web browsing the fan noise can get a bit annoying.

Thanks.

Are you sure the monitors not turning on isn't a gcard problem? I had that one and I just reseated my 670 and all was good. Taking ages to boot is something I've only noticed when my HDD was playing up (Seagate Barracuda).

I'm using a Rampage as well.

Also, I have the PCH fan at 50% but you can turn it off completely.

Booting is fine, it's posting that takes ages (by which I mean for the screens to turn on and for it to get to the point where you press DEL to enter the BIOS).

I've also tried switching the graphics cards around and it didn't make any difference.

R IV E is a nice board and all, but now wishing I'd gone for the R IV F or P9X79 WS instead.

Posting takes a long time because of the memory training process initially and then detecting all the items you have attached to the board and all the extra features such as ASmedia controller the rest.

Disable all items / features you dont use e.g ASmedia ports, Wifi etc etc. This will help a little.

a lot of people are having problems, not just on this board with the new Nvidia series of cards. The hardware is new as are the drivers and bios that accompany the first generation of Nvidia PCI EX 3.0 cards. This happened with 7970 too. Wait for updated bios with improved PCI EX 3.0 tuning and new drivers before jumping to conclusions.

Posts like this are making me wonder if i am better going for the rampage formula...

Its basically the same bios. The problem with new hardware is the same which ever board you get bios and drivers need to mature. If your not going 8 dimm, not going quad fire and not benching on phase or above go formula anyway.

The driver could also be at fault here guys Nvidia have had a lot of problems with this driver.

I don't think it's getting far enouh for Nvidia drivers to be an issue.
Like I say, the problems/delays are intermittent, so it's hard to imagine which setting I'd need to change/disable.

I'm not saying the formula board would be better, as 8 Pack said, basically the same bios. It's just that it's cheaper, has a lower set of connectors to confuse me with and I'm not sure if there's a waterblock for the Formula board which would save methat temptation!

I think the P9X79 WS would be my first choice now. Of course if I had that board I might find problems with that and then I'd have wished I'd got the Extreme/Formula...

I also looked at the workstation board, great layout and lower power consumption but I seem to remember being put off by some of the gaming benchmarks for it.

Thats easy improve the benchmark by overclocking it more!!! Tuning RAM etc!!!

Have you tried forcing PCI EX 2.0 in Bios. Tried changing the PCI and CPU scews these often impact performnce. Whta exactly are your overclocked settings??? Remember the PCI lanes are controlled on the CPU now so increased VTT may be necessary.

Post some settings and lets see if we can get this stable.

Everything is currently running at stock.
(As it happens I was soon going to post a thread asking how to OC the RAM, I'm thinking My cpu is probably not gonna be a great clocker, so probably wont be able to push it too far, especially with current cooling (Silver Arrow).

Switching the PCI-e lanes to Gen2 seems like a backwards step?

As the latest Nvidia driver forces PCI 2.0 then I doubt that very much. PCI ex 3.0 shows very little improvement in the latest cards anyway to be honest.

Ok, new issue that only occurred last night...

The motherboard temp reading went up to 127 in both Asus AI Suite and HW Monitor.
After reseting it went back to 30.

A quick search of the internet doesn't bring back any obvious hits, so I assume this isn't common?
It has only happened once so far but is a bit concerning.
