I've just re-built my main rig and used all the old bits in my secondary PC. I didn't buy a new PSU so my No2 system is badly under powered (350w PSU)

Here's the spec of the secondary PC:

i7 920
P6T-SE
12gb
2 x Hard Drive
ATI HD 4890
Lots of fans (Antec 1200)
(Haven't overclocked anything yet due to PSU, dont think the stress test would last very long  )

So I'm wondering how good a cheap 750w PSU can be?

If I can get a cheap one that will do the job OK then great.

If the cheap ones are just cheap and nasty then I will probably buy a descent new one for my main PC then use the old one (Hiper Type M 880, about 4 years old) in the secondary system.

If I have to buy one for my new PC would a Corsair AX 750 be a good choice?

New PC spec:

i7 3820
Asus X79 Sabertooth
32gb
2 x Hard Drive
1 x SSD
GTX 670
Water cooled

Thanks in advance ;)

I think 550w might be little tight. If its going to cost £65 plus for a cheaper PSU I think I might get the AX750 for my new PC then use the old one to power this PC.

i wouldnt call the ax750 a cheap psu...but its brilliant, one of the best 750w psu out there

I wouldn't call it cheap either but if its for my main PC I'm happier to spend more ;)

I think you're underestimating a good branded PSU. For that sort of system 500w is more than enough. You only need 750w+ if you're planning a multi GPU setup.

On the other hand, that Hiper, is no way a decent brand. They have been known to take out the entire system when it's overloaded .

Your probably right, I just went by an online PSU calculator that said I need 567w - no idea how accurate they are :o

 Hiper  They used to burn well !

lol - never knew that, I've been running it for 4 years with dual 4890's

Great, so now maybe the smart move would be replace both PSU's?

At this rate the next thing I watercool will be my credit card :D

well not really, considering 1 ax750 = 2 cm silent pros ;p

Hiper is not bad really, it was one model and a specific wattage AFAIR. Other psus have had their bad models, some Enermax Liberty, Antec Truepower 430 and others suffering bad caps etc.., FSP Eplison etc..
