What would you do if you had bought this item off ebay and...

Had the exact same happen with a member on here in the MM. I stated CityLink courier at something like £10 but he made a big song and doo daa about sending it via Special Delivery, so I did him a favour, which also meant I had to go to the post office rather than having it collected, only to be charged like £16 ... I sent it anyway, emailed the guy via trust and said look, this is how much it cost and showed him the receipt, and he basically told me no chance, that's what we agreed. Needless to say, I wont sell him to again, miserable ****

Whoa! Bit harsh! That was me remember!

We agreed that it'd be sent special delivery, we at NO POINT said it will be cheap. The sale was agreed for the mobo with RM special delivery. It would be £10 if the package was under 2kg, which for the motherboard, would be pretty easy. I've sent a few mobos before and one was under 1 kg, the other was a bit over. Both times it cost me only £9.something to send via RM special.

You were selling a new mobo for a few bob less than OcUK price, by paying £16 for postage I may aswell have gone brand new!

Calling me "a miserable ****" really was uncalled for.

for future reference, we send our items via collect+ which is one of the cheapest methods i know of, and also means it's sent via courier but you can drop at many local corner shops so allows you to drop when works best for you

Don't pay is my view.

The seller advised postage of £8.50 and the OP paid this and received the item. If the postage was actually going to be £23 then the OP may have not bid on the item.

Caveat vendit!

Your second part of that doesn't really work in the OP's circumstances though... have you read the post?
He won an item which was 'Collection Only' and only then asked the seller to ship it to him.

If the seller had turned around and said it would cost £500 to ship to him, then he would either have to pay up, collect it or face a strike on his account.

Another thought I just had is the fact that eBay has now changed the options for shipping costs. Many items have a limit on what you can charge... even when you might be sending heavy items.

So far we've had 2 adverts for Collect+ in this thread, seems a little suspect.

Yes, I've used Collect+ but it's cheap for a reason, delivery takes around 3 to 5 working days and is no way guaranteed.

Suspect? The posters who have recommended it are hardly throw-away accounts.

I'd not heard of it before, but I'm glad that I have now. There's a place literally across the road from me. The shop outside my house does it, and I had no idea until now.

I'm with the guys who are saying "get stuffed".

You won the auction, tried to vary the terms of deliverance, he gave a quote to vary those terms, you accepted and now he wants more. More fool him for not doing his homework IMHO. Or if he had but tried to dupe/guilt trip you into paying the extra afterwards then still no for being foolish.

I purchased an item from ebay. Originally the auction listed collection only and I emailed the seller to ask if he would post it.

He replied saying yes and when I won the auction he sent me a revised invoice with £8.50 on top for postage.

I paid and the item arrived this afternoon only I have also received a email today from the seller asking for an additional £13 as the postage at the post office cost over £21

What would you do? Pay the extra £13 or tell him to get stuffed?

tell him get stuffed, you made the agreement at £8.50 for postage, if it cost more then he should have done his homework better.

I've cost myself money by using royal mail in the past too. I checked an item at the post office...but when I packed it as I would like to receive it the postage went up by a few quid!

Not suspect at all. I mentioned them because they are cheap and the half dozen times I have used them all of my deliveries have arrived in 2-3 days (one even next day). I just like the fact you don't have to wait in for a courier to come, and I was even able to drop one parcel off on a Sunday afternoon.
