Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Hi guys,

I'm after some advice. After a **** connection for the past few days, I'm seriously thinking about ditching VM. I've been thinking for a while now that my bill is ridiculous, but having gone through the latest one properly, it's just not right.

I have:
XL Broadband, 50mb - It's clocking in at about 25mbps! Another story entirely.
L TV Package
Talk Unlimited Phone.
No Tevo boxes and no superhub.

That equates to; £63.65/mo (inc. line rental). How does this compare to you lot, and what can I do to get a better deal? Threaten to leave and ask for a Tevo box? I've been with them for about 18 months now.

On a side note, has anyone in the south london area been having massive problems with their connection over the last couple of days?

GRAPH NOW VOID.

Unplayable on most games. It's never been like this before - rang Virgin and the girl told me to change my wireless channel - after 10 minutes of trying to educate her that as I connect via ethernet this would make no difference I raged and hung up. If the problem isn't sorted by Monday I'll call retentions and give them a piece of my mind.

Anyone else finding the modem mode on the superhub is epicly ****, if it doesn't restart itself randomly I start getting major packet loss and appalling latency every few days and have to power cycle it.

Apparently the modem mode is just a software 'bodge' and the even though the other routing functions and wireless are disabled from access within the GUI - they are still active behind the scenes. I wanted to try and reconnect my old 50Mb modem as I didn't realise it had a gigabit ethernet port but its been deactivated :/

I know the old 50Mb modem can only really handle 100Mb WAN speeds but at least it was stable compared to the 'superhub' :/

Update:

Called the 50Mb/100Mb support line and got them to reactivate the old 50Mb modem, should do me fine until I'm forced to use the superhub with 120Mb.

Really? whens that being rolled out then? Bit misleading in their advertisement then, as i didn't know they wouldnt be upgraded at the same time and thought id get the 5meg upload straight away!

They're doing it in stages apparently.

Will my upload speed increase, as well?

Yes! It’s not just your downloads that’ll become much faster. Your upload speeds will be automatically increased as we upgrade our network, so you get the best of both worlds.

Depending on the progress of the network upgrade there maybe a delay after your download speed is increased before your upload speed boost occurs.

Hi folks.

I've been with VM at the new house since we moved in on 14th Jan 2011. I'm paying around £60 a month on average for 50Meg BB, Medium TV, VHD+ and Medium calls. That 60 quid includes a couple of phone calls.

Am I right in thinking that I am not now contracted, and can barter for a better deal?? Love the 50MB broadband (since there isn't ADSL2 in our village it's the only fast option) but would love the TIVO box etc, and would love the overall monthly cost to come down.

What do you think is my best strategy for cost reduction???

thanks

Is it also going to be better for me to turn my superhub into modem only mode and get a seperate router?
As others have said, the wireless on the SuperHub is absolutely shocking - If you have any intention of using wireless devices I'd look to switch it ASAP!

After a few hours on the phone to VM second line support, I've diagnosed that the router is causing about a 50% drop in speed. However, latency is still a massive problem right now even when connecting directly via modem:

Pathetic, engineer coming tomorrow to test the equipment but I know for a fact it's the Croydon exchange/LBR that's dropping packets. Got to play their game though and let them do their silly engineer steps before I get to third line.

This is different from last night when the problem was much worse. Last night it hit some hop of 10.9.xxx.xxxx and then the Croydon hop then the destination (2 hops). Now it's doing bloody 13!

Graph is looking a little better and latency on gaming is at least bearable. But it's still not as good as a week ago:

Does anyone know if I can get out of the Virgin contract somehow with 16 months remaining ? :/

The service has been abysmal, 5 engineer callouts, phone has gone dead twice and Quake Live is unplayable with very high pings and jitter.

Can I just cancel my Direct Debit or something? Really don't give a toss about my credit rating if they wanna go down that route.
