3D is overrated

FOr around a year now all the films I've watched have been 3D. But yesterday I finally got around to watching Avengers and the only place near me screening it had it in 2D. I have to say that I enjoyed it so much more for not having to wear glasses and not having a slight loss of colour.

Given a choice in the future I htink I'll keep watching 2D from now on.

Anyone else agree that 2D is better than 3D?

Same for me.

I think a properly calibrated screen with a worthy Blu-ray transfer can give you as much of a sense of depth as you will ever need.

Before I ever saw a film in 3D I strongly suspected I wouldn't like it, I was right. It adds nothing, except a few £ on the cost of getting in.

We're more than capable of perceiving depth on a 2D plane, and maybe it's because we're so used to it being this way that anything else seems wrong. 3D adds a physical depth to the image that is simply not necessary, and doesn't actually look 'right'. That's on top of the various other well known drawbacks of watching in 3D.

The only I way I'll see 3D as not being a complete failure, is if in the long run it ends up being a step along the way towards some kind of visual enhancement that is genuinely beneficial to the viewing experience.

Perhaps it was just the cruddy glasses I was given at the cinema, but the Avengers was so dark with the 3D glasses on it spoiled the experience. Some scenes were just too dark to make out what was going on.

I'm still not won over on 3D..

I can't do it. I went into Comet and stuck on the glasses and watched Avatar on it. Initially looked good, but the first thing I thought was that I couldn't watch it for half an hour, let alone over 2 hours. I could see the headache coming a mile off.

Active shutter is the worst. Just too uncomfortable. I could probably just about manage to watch something using the passive system, but still would not enjoy it nearly as much as a good 2D version.

I feel sorry for people as well. They get caught up in it and when it comes to choosing their new TV, they often end up sacrificing 2D PQ for 3D ability.

I disagree, Prometheus was absolutely stunning in 3D. There is definitely room for improvement though :)
Do you think that was down to the 3D, or because it's a good looking film either way?

I don't think it's a coincidence that the best examples of 3D are in films that are visually outstanding to begin with.

In my mind 2d can't be compared to 3d. It's a totally different medium. It's a completely different way of watching a movie. I think it'd be fair to say you prefered a movie in 2d over 3d but comparing them as a meduim seems pointless.

For example, in 2d the movies seem far more immersive, you can see the whole picture and notice a lot more of the background/scenery. Where in 3d you lose yourself in the visual effect of depth, although an interesting experience, you don't see everything. It's almost two enviroments on completely either end of the scale in that context. Almost two different movies.

Coming back to the orginal questions.

I like 3d, but usually prefer 2d.

However, do I think 3d is over-rated ? No. It is new and it is interesting, I do wish cinemas would do less of it though or at least have the option of the two experiences.

It may work in cinemas, but I never feel it will be implemented in it's best in the home.

Agreed, doesn't work on TV or PC. I still enjoy it in the cinema though.

I reckon it was already a good looking film, but the 3D made it more immersive, at least for me.

I really enjoyed the 3d in Prometheus.
But generally yeah your right,

Be interesting to watch Prometheus on a non glasses tv.

3d needs to pop into the screen rather than out. Out looks unnatural.

I think other way around. You can't make a 50ft screen. In a cinema. But you can make screens as already done at home. Cinema having to be in projection is a massive handicap. I think in the future 3d on ths will vastly outperform cinema.
I would really like to see the glasses free TVs in action. Hopfully producers will also learn how to use it. That I feel they just don't at the moment. There needs to be studies on it and heavy tweaking to get it right, that hopefully will come in time.

I saw Avengers, MIB3 and Prometheus all in 3D last weekend, Prometheus was epic to look at, and the actual film was awesome, MIB3 wasnt so good in 3d, made my eyes go weird, but Avengers in 3d, my word, brilliant. Totally loved it and not a bad word to say about 3d at all.

No,I disagree.... 3D is the future of film,so you better get used to it. ;)

Also,I think you mean a slight loss of light, not colour?

Disagree.

3D is just a fad / gimmick and it's the 'thing' to do at the minute.

Prometheus was stunning in '2D'

I've seen it several times, once in 3D.

3D makes films overly dark.

No it really isn't... 3D is a choice that makes commercial and artistic sense and is neither a fad nor a gimmick.3D is here to stay, like it or not.
The beauty is of course that you have a choice to watch 2D if you so wish.

3D makes films overly dark.
This I agree with, however new bulbs, new projectors and brighter gamma at post production level should sort this problem out
