3D is overrated

I just don't get why people seem so evangelistic about hating 3D. It's just another alternative purchase decison, like a mobile phone or a car or which pub you frequent.

You 3D luddites don't go around saying you wish opera would die a death just because you prefer ballet.

Your analogy is flawed. If it was a choice between opera and opera that costs more per ticket but is performed while the leads are drunk, and they're drunk more often drunk than sober, then you'd have a point.

I want to see Prometheus next week. I have a choice of 3 3D showings per day or one 2D showing. The 3D showing will cost me more and - if my past experience of 3D is anything to go by - will not be any better than the 2D showing and will likely be worse. That's ridiculous.

However the 3D version of Prometheus is one of the best examples of 3D "done right".

By this I mean no blatantly obvious things flying out of the screen, it just gives the film depth and immersion. It's a beautiful looking movie as it is and 3D just enhances that without detracting from the experience.

So why don't you go and see the opera and ignore the "drunk" opera completely?

Why do you even want to go an see a film which is primarly about special effects and 3D when you don't like the latter?

It's like me going to the opera and then complaining that they weren't singing in English.

This is one of the reasons why I also dont like 3D, a lot of the films are comming to my cinema in 3D only, Ive walked away from films because to me 3D adds nothing to the cinema experience for me, I did recently see prometheus in 3D, and its been my first 3D film in a while - I still thought the 3D was a waste of money, adding nothing to the overall experience, it will be the last 3D film for me.

Normal 3D sucks, it just washes the colours out. Imax 3D is worth seeing.

I like to stick with 2D though, the colours are amazing and its a crisp image.

Getting tired of saying this now.
The colours aren't washed out.
The 3D version of the film has a specific 3D grade to match that of the 2d grade while accounting for the fact that you are wearing 3D glasses.

People don't give a hoot about '3D grade matching that of the 2D grade', the simple fact is, is that the picture is dark / colours are washed out, thus making the overall quality of the picture poorer. You can say what you like, but as it stands in this moment in time, picture quality suffers hugely with 3D.

You misunderstand.

If you take the glasses off, of course it's going to looks brighter and more vivid. However, you aren't looking at the grade properly unless you have the glasses on.

But I'm not going to take the glasses off am I? With the glasses on, the picture quality poor.

I expected a pretty high proportion of people who don't like 3d wouldn't let themselves like it.not everyone but a few.

Its been a while since I have seen a 2d film in the cinema. I don't think the 3d films are dark at all.

I don't think that's the case at all. If you look at HD, that is quite clearly 'better' than SD, so you don't get people trying to say it looks worse purely to justify not spending the extra money. What it comes down to is yes it's better, but is it worth the extra cost? To some people it is, to others it isn't.

3D is different, the same complaints come up time and time again, colours look washed out, scenes look blurry, not as easy to focus on certain areas. To some, these complaints either don't matter, or they happen to not see them, so it's only a question of whether or not they like the 3D effect. When I'm watching 3D, I see none of the benefit, and all of the drawbacks. Adding physical depth to a scene doesn't make me enjoy or appreciate it more in any way, it doesn't make me like the film better overall.

As the technology matures those complaints should go away, at that point I'll be fine with watching in 3D, because even if I don't feel it's actually adding anything, at least it's not taking anything away from it, which is what's happening at the moment.

People don't complain when there's a very clear and obvious jump in visual quality, but right now that's not what 3D is because in its current state it's full of compromises that many aren't willing to make.

exactly.

I have done. I came out with a massive headache afterwards, just like every other 3D film that I've been to see. I do like IMAX though, just not the 3D attached to it.

Having seen the film in both '3D' and '2D' my advice; please, please, please see this film in '2D' :)

To put it very simply, it's really; really, really, really beautiful.
