Hello,

I have a laptop which will not power on. In fact, none of the leds work except the one near the power plug, which goes on for 4-5 sec then shuts off. Aside from that, no life.

When I plug in the power, this led goes on for about 5 sec:

Then goes off:

Looked over all the chips and caps around the power area, they all look okay:

Any ideas ? Is it a chance it is the power adaptor ? It behaves the same with the battery in, the leds on the front of the laptop that it's charging or plugged in do not work, the led near the power plug is the only one that works and only for 5-6 sec after plugging in. Unfortunately I can't test it with a different power adaptor as all our lappy's have a different power plug, this one has the pin on the ''adapter side''/adapter plug rather than in the laptop plug. All my other adapters are ''female'' and this one's a ''male''. Stupid HP/Compaq, I have an older HP laptop which has female adapter and the rest of our lappy's are all Acers with also a female plug...

Anything odd on the pictures ? Does it sound like a borked adapter to you ? Any other way to test it ?

I see that it is stripped down in the pics. Are you testing like this?or is the keyboard and screen connected when you test?

No but before it was stripped nothing was different.
The fans won't even turn, the leds on front won't light up at all (like the one that should light up when it's plugged in the mains).

I've tested it with another power adaptor, no luck :(.

Board seems dud unless I'm missing something. Stripped it to look for anything odd, like a broken connector/pin or burned out chips or whatever... But can't see anything odd.

EDIT: Why have my pics been replaced by URL's ?

Hard to really tell much from those images as they seem a little blurry. Do you have a multimeter handy? Is power reaching the board?

Maybe your images were over 1024x768 and have been replaced by the forum.

Don't have a working multimeter atm :(.

O/T: 1024x768 ? Since when is that, I haven't been too active in the past couple of months on OcUK. I noticed the rule in the FAQ recently, but sounds silly to me, where there never was a limit before . It's 2012, surely most users are on 1600 or 1920 res... And any decent mobile device will scale images well too.

Well there's nothing too obvious from the images anyway that I can see.

It looks like the white and yellow leads are there for the LED and considering that I does come on for a time it's likely something is actually wrong with the power circuit on the board, wherever that is.
