Size and type of hand baggage allowed
Hand baggage is luggage that you carry on the plane with you, while hold baggage is luggage that you check-in. All baggage items, including hand baggage, must be screened, regardless of size.
From 29 April 2010, the Department for Transport no longer sets a maximum size for items of hand baggage. You should always check size limits with your airline and airport before you travel. Airlines may also have their own rules about the number of bags you are allowed to take on the aircraft. It's best to contact them if you have any questions.
I don't grudge it when it's actual hand baggage size, but a lot of folks these days seem to take massive bags on these days that are way over the limit. Really gets on my wick now when I get on a plane and I can't even put my jacket in the overhead locker because it's full of some cheapskates backpack or roller luggage that they shouldn't have got on with if the airline was bothering to enforce their rules. You can get by with just hand luggage - be careful with liquids of course. Loads of American ***** do it to my great annoyance when I'm going to the States. Massive amounts of hand luggage and nothing in the hold.

There is no additional customs faff at all, if anything its easier!
You are saving almost no hassle by taking carry on luggage only on a trip like this.
I'm guessing to save some money - have airlines started charging for any checked in luggage now?
Any international flight is still going to give you one free check in bag though surely?
why would you want to ?
