I'm going to spend a week in Tokyo at a friends house sometime later this year, is it possible to get by with bringing hand luggage only on the plane? What's the maxmimum capacity that you're allowed on?

Check with the airline but most of them follow the guidelines for international flights.

You can get by with just hand luggage - be careful with liquids of course. Loads of American ***** do it to my great annoyance when I'm going to the States. Massive amounts of hand luggage and nothing in the hold.

From Directgov:

Size and type of hand baggage allowed

Hand baggage is luggage that you carry on the plane with you, while hold baggage is luggage that you check-in. All baggage items, including hand baggage, must be screened, regardless of size.

From 29 April 2010, the Department for Transport no longer sets a maximum size for items of hand baggage. You should always check size limits with your airline and airport before you travel. Airlines may also have their own rules about the number of bags you are allowed to take on the aircraft. It's best to contact them if you have any questions.

Seems that if I stuff my jacket pockets full as well, I should be ok. Won't be carrying an liquids, foods or a laptop, just makes the whole customs process much easier. Just wish every country was like Portugal where there's no customs or security or anything and you can just walk off the plane onto the street.

Is it necessary to have any sepcial arrangements for prescriptions that are controlled drugs?

I don't grudge it when it's actual hand baggage size, but a lot of folks these days seem to take massive bags on these days that are way over the limit. Really gets on my wick now when I get on a plane and I can't even put my jacket in the overhead locker because it's full of some cheapskates backpack or roller luggage that they shouldn't have got on with if the airline was bothering to enforce their rules.

Try catching an internal US flight that's full. They all come on with a massive carry on bag (it may well be within guidelines) plus their laptop bag and other stuff and there's never enough overhead storage. I walk on with no hand luggage and have to stand about waiting on them forcing their baggage into the overhead areas and getting jostled by some yank tool. Grr!

Checking baggage on a long haul flight is simplicity itself - check in online and you queue for a matter of minutes at bag drop and you are never waiting long for your bags at the baggage reclaim area - they are usually out by the time you clear security. There is no additional customs faff at all, if anything its easier!

You are saving almost no hassle by taking carry on luggage only on a trip like this.

Quite. The only real reason to take hand luggage is to save money. Even if you have a smallish bag, putting it in the hold means you don't have to carry it all round the airport. If the baggage allowance is free, you may aswell take something to put in the hold - will allow you to bring more back as well.

Any international flight is still going to give you one free check in bag though surely?

Any that I've taken.. but the US carriers seem to be flirting with dropping it.. they're giving you a free second one with loyalty points, or if you use their credit cards.. to me it looks as if they're getting ready to test the water by charging you extra - I assumed that was the case here.

Honest, it's one more thing to worry about... once you check in your baggage you can forget about it. If you carry heavy hand luggage around you'll regret it.

After seeing the limits, there should be plenty of space to bring things back, if all I'm putting in the bag are my camera, towel, few shirts and changes of underwear there will be room to spare. Thinking about it, it may even be possible to do it with no luggage at all on the way there!

Yes, because arriving in a foreign country with no bag is sure to get you through customs quicker. I reckon they'll be more interested in you!
