Got a lot of work coming up for the next few months which will involve a lot of reading pdf/word wise.
I've tried the kindle but couldn't get used to it, as the constant scrolling and zoooming broke up any sort of continuity.

and whilst my pc is alright, I'd like to be a lot more mobile/lie on beds/ trains etc

So basically looking for a cheap tablet (sub 300 preferably) for this task. Internet surfing is a bonus but not mandatory. Things like games etc are not important. (Though being able to play a few songs would be nice).

Any ideas

The only tablet worth having is an iPad

* (To qualify this, I have worked extensively with Samsung Tabs (including the latest, which are by no means worth the price), Blackberry Playbook and whatever that Sony thing was.)

Very nice. The fiance' didn't want an ipad as she is opposed to apple stuff, and chose this one instead Really impressed so far considering the price. Plus you can easily transfer docs onto it using the inbuilt microsd slot.

This, unless you want to be punished by the horrible sub £200 tat.

I'm going to suggest that viewing PDF files on the iPad 3 with a 10" 'retina' display is a lot better experience than a 7.5" screen. Also iOS handles font rendering better than Android (although ICS has improved this)

I do like the price of that tablet and at least it has ICS.

Yep it's a given that the screen is noway near as good but for the price it seems well built and quite snappy, plus I prefer android to ios.

I read a lot of scientific journals. I have an iPad 3 and it's a joy to use, especially with image reproduction. I haven't tried anything else, won't need to - as I'm very happy with my iPad.

I have an android phone (SGS2) - so I'm not a apple fanboi :p

This. Save your money and buy an iPad.

My iPad is far superior to my HP Touchpad or the Samsung Galaxy Tab my wife uses......especially for PDFs etc.....

Going to have to agree with this one. Especially if they are graphically intensive PDFs.

At the moment I have an iPad(1), Asus Transformer and Blackberry playbook. Have also has Samsung Tabs in the past.

The Playbook handles PDFs better than the others. I'm not sure whether some people actually read your request, particularly the part that said "Internet surfing not mandatory" but that suggests to me that the work requirement is the overriding priority.

So, I imagine you don't want to spend loads more when you can get away with under £200. Lots of the sub £200 tablets are cack but the Playbook really is £400 hardware with little software support. For £160odd quid the Playbook its a bargain if you're not interested in loads of Apps. The browser and media playback are hard to beat.

Having said all that, the 16Gb Wifi iPad 2, refurbished from Apple is excellent value in my opinion if you want an all rounder.

To read pdfs, look at the resolution of the display.
IMO a minimum 800 pixels is needed along the short axis.
However an iPad @1024x768 is probably OK depending on the pdf.

Read "Gary Glitters" on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 frequently. Does the job nicely. Also has some good games (and supports flash :p)

Hmm seems like the recommendations are for ipads at the moment, bit out of budget! Maybe ill pick up a 2nd generation one, unless people would recommend paying the extra for the high res screen?

The PlayBook handles pdfs and documents flawlessly in my experiance. And its a fair bit cheaper than the iPad

Avoid tablets with anything less than 1280x800 resolution, 10" is a must for reading in full page view. Cheap Android tablets only offer a low resolution.

The cheapest 1280x800 Android tablet would be the Xoom.. ~£250 if you can find it. It's heavy though!
